I have 9,000 miles on my 02 Disco. Just changed oil (Disco standard plus filter). I would like to use synthetic with the next change. If using Mobil 1 and Mobil filter, do you still need to change washer or is it not necessary with the Mobil 1? |

The washer and filter can be the same. I would recommend that you use a Crosland "long" filter (found at atlantic british if I remember correctly) They are bigger than the standard LR filter. As for the washer, it really has nothing to do with the oil. It helps take off the strain to your drain plug when you tighten it down. I replace mine with a new one every time I change the oil. They charge too much for a little peice of copper, but nothing's too much for my mule. Some people don't change it. |

My understanding is that the washer, at least on my 2001 DII, is because the metal molds to the pan to keep a seal. On my DII, the washer is aluminum, as is the pan, which allows the new washer to mold to the pan each time to prevent leaks caused by using an old washer that is bent out of shape. This could be totally wrong, but is just what I was told at my last oil change. Incidentally, I'm using 5w50 Quakerstate synthetic and a K&N filter on mine. |

CB checking in... I have reused my washer almost ten times now and have no reason to believe the PO ever changed the washer. Have had similar experiences with many other engines. I really don't see how the oil you use will determine the frequency of changing the drain plug washer. As for the filter, I have looked everywhere and prefer either the AC-Delco PF-2 or the Motorcraft FL-1A for my '95 Disco with a 3.9. Oh yeah, I get my oil from Tractor Supply in five-gallon pails and before anybody bashes me for the oil, it has the same designations the oil in the quart containers has. Paul |
