This is probably a dumb question, but that has rarely stopped me. What is the function/purpose of the small 5w "sidelights" that are part of the front headlamp on my DII? Like I said, this may be a dumb question. I just never noticed them until I was recently looking at the headlamps due to a crack that is forming in the lens.

Thanks, Rick

Those are called "city lights" in Europe. In some cities over there it's illegal to drive in the city using your headlights, so European vehicles have these in lieu of parking lights. City lights are considered "cool" by some. Consider yourself a step ahead!

David, how do you turn them on? As far as I can tell they don't come on with Parking/low beam/hi beam or with the fogs.

Not sure about a DII, but on my '97 DI they come on with the parking lights and the headlights. They're not very bright, so it may be hard to tell if they're on with the headlights. Maybe someone with a DII can add something...

Rick, they should indeed come on with the "parking lights" on the dII. I must say though, those light bulbs, are the only ones I've had to replace on my DII since I bought it. Perhaps you have the same Lucas I do...

Thanks, Dave. I will see if they are fried. I don't drive around with just my parking lights on very often so maybe I just didn't notice them when they were working.
