Help I am being attacked by the Lucas God's! I am getting a whhhhrrrrring sound coming through the radio. The frequency of the sound increases as the engine RPMs increase. The sound goes away when the radio is off and the engine is on. The sound also goes away when the engine is off and the radio is on. I have a feeling that I may need some new ignition wires or is there something else I should investigate. What do you guys think? If I need to replace wires which ones should I replace. Thanks In Advance, jeff. PS. Long live Discoweb! |

just replacing the wires will not do it. maybe if you get the beefy (been using that word alot lately) ones.....like the 8mm magnecors. they are better insulated than stock ones. i have the 7mm magnecors and i still get the noise. i usually listen to the CD player loud enough i don't hear it. or just try insulating the wires yourself. |

Sounds like it may be a bad ground to the radio. I'd start there. I think the radio ground point is right behind the actual radio. (It's been a while since I pulled my radio out.) Should be pretty easy to find - black wire. -Tommy |

i did that too. still get the sound, but does not really bother me. use to it. very common among DI's of course. i get the sound in my CB as well. i am thinking of relocating my ground. may or may not help. |

Mine only does it on AM stations, FM and CD are clear. Did it both before and after Magnecors... Haven't tried improving the ground... I don't use AM, so it's not been a bother.... -L |

I had that same problem, with associated alarm troubles though. I always knew the alarm was going to act up when the radio started "whhhrrrr"-ing. It was intermittent until a few days ago when I messed with the positive lead from the battery. Now everything seems to be sorted out. At least until it happens agin. If it happens again......... |

drbuck, I'd swear it was the ground! Not an exclusive Lucas problem. I've had this happen alot when upgrading the stereo in cars. Sometimes the ground becomes loose and you get engine noise coming the speakers. Could've happened when you hit a bump or something. I'd check this out first. And before disconnecting the radio, get the code if you don't already have it. Good Luck |

Thanks Guys, I will check the radio ground ASAP and then I will go from there. Mark you may be interested in this. I went out at lunch time and when I went to lock the truck the alarm system wouldn't respond. Nothing...the doors wouldn't lock or anything. Does this sound like your problem? After turning the ignition on and off again, the security system would respond...freaky! First time that has happened. Take Care, jeff. |

Jeff, Yep, that was/is my alarm problem. Did you hear the relays under the passenger side dash start clicking? Almost everytime my alarm wouldn't respond to the fob button signal I could hear clicking coming from the Alarm ECU. It is the Green Box located on the "flip-down" carrier under the passenger side dash. Sometimes a relay in the driver's side footwell would click also. If I kept messing with pushing fob buttons the system would somehow reset itself. This "reset" would sometimes last for a month or so, but more often than not it would only last until I turned off the ignition. All of my problems with the alarm seemed to be associated with an intermittent loss of electrical power to the accessories (dome lights, radio, clock, dash lights) when I turned off the key from the running position to the accessory position. After tightening up the positive connection to the battery, all seems to be right with the alarm system. I am, however, keeping my fingers crossed. Mark |

Mark, that sounds exactly like my problem although I wasn't able to hear the relays since I was near a busy highway. I will try tightening the positive terminal on mine tonight. I was also wondering if there is a loose wire in the steering column since I noticed that my whhhrrring sound is much worse when the headlights are turned on. Maybe all of these symptoms are related?? I will let you know what I find. jeff |

The whining from stereos and CB's can often be traced back to a 'ground loop' or running a ground right off the battery. http://www.epanorama.net/documents/groundloop/index.html |

What you are most likely hearing is a whine from the alternator, based on your comment that the pitch of the whine corresponds to engine RPMs. It is caused by ground loops. There's a lot of good documentation online about ways to reduce ground-loop noise. If you are using an aftermarket amplifier, try turning down the gain on your amp. I'm not sure if the stock amplifiers have adjustable gain, but it might be worth looking into if the whining is driving you batty. |

Jeff, That is really weird. I also thought I was having problems with wires in the steering column, but I was thinking it was something to do with a loose ignition switch or something. I never noticed the radio whine being associated with turning the lights on, but I did have all the power to the accessories shut down when I would turn on the lights or switch the high-beams on, which is really freakin' weird when you are cruising at 80 mph down the highway, and then turn the lights on, only to have everything die for a split second. I always was thinking I had a bad ground somewhere, but I had know idea about how to track it down. I think it is possible that my bad ground was at the positive terminal of the battery. It seemd to work for me but your mileage may vary. Mark |

it does sound like a bad ground. Check the battrey terminal ground make sure it isn't coroaded and is very tight also you may need to change your spark plug wires. check the ground behind your radio also try adding a ground wire from your front hood to your engine bay somthing 12g or bigger. Also if you have many aux. items and you grounded them to your battery terminal take them off and put all of them together and ground them to one spot with bare metal. Ken |

Guys, this stuff is gold! Mark it is really weird driving down the road only to have the speedo drop to zero, the radio shut off and the lights blink. I have a set of Hellas on the brush bar that are spliced into the high beam shut-off (the shut-off that would turn the factory fog lights off when switching from low to high beam). I mounted the Hella relay beside the washer fluid reservoir on the bulk head and grounded the low current side to the bulk head. This was done approximately a year ago...maybe my grounding location is deteriorating. Thanks, jeff. |
