Hey Folks,

On the 'old' Discoweb, we had a discussion about the D1 alarm antenna. I had a D1 at the time, and I extended the antenna wire, which gave me better range. I poked around my 2001 DII in the same location (passanger foot area) and I can't find the wire. Does anyone know where this antenna wire is in the DII's?

Thanks in advance!!

I have a 97 D1 and I am interested in find out how to increase the reliability of my remote. I thinks the earlier post may be related. I am having problems arming the alarm 9 times out of 10 I have to use the key to open and lock the doors.

Just extending the antenna an arbitrary amount will not necesarily work, in fact it may make matters worse.
These antennas are normally cut to a 1/4 wave length (approx. 17cm) so if you do extend it try and make it exactly double the length keeping in mind that the antenna actually starts inside the receiver and is probably slightly longer than the piece of wire you can see.
Also try and make sure that it is not wrapped around anything and hanging free.
The TX range in the Disco I was very poor, they seemd to have improved this on the Disco II, I can activate mine about 10m away.

Good luck.

On my old 97 DI, I just attached a BNC connector to the antenna wire and then used a T-connector to splice it into my CB/Scanner antenna. Before this 'mod' I would have to be within 5-7 feet to activate, after the 'mod' , I could do it over 50 feet away.

I just got a factory tech manual for my DII, and found that the alarm module/antenna is in the headliner, in front of the rear sunroof. I don't really want to take out the entire headliner, so I'll just leave it alone for now.

Joel,

When talking about receiving clear radio reception, you're right that you can calculate a correct antenna length, 1/4 wave, etc.

The problem w/ the Disco's remote is that the wire is found down in the passenger footwell. This is supposedly an artifact of being a LHD version of a vehicle that was originally desigened to be a RHD... My understanding is that the RHD versions keep the antenna up in the pillar along the windshield. When you they build it as a LHD version, the whole system slides down into the footwell area instead. By extending the antenna, you are getting the antenna up to where it can receive the signal w/o letting the body block it.

FWIW...

To do this correctly you should run a short length of 50 ohm coax (RG174)cable from the Rx up to the point that you want the antenna and then attach the coax to the 1/4 wave antenna. This way you will be preserving the impedance of the circuit as much as possible. The easiest way to do this would be to strip the end of coax into a half wave dipole with about 8.5cm braid and 8.5cm centre core.
By just extending the antenna from the footwell to say roof height could create a large mismatch and it would be a little hit and miss as to the improvement.
I know we are not building an antenna for a 100w VHF transmitting station but the same theory applies!!!
