While I was driving in the highway at about 120 km/h I heared a clonking noise from my rear right wheel. I stopped, unpack the wheel and unbold the 5 bolts that kept the axle shaft on the Hub. I removed the axle and I saw the bearing was worn out. The strange thing is that there was not washer joint (Gasket?) between the axle and the hub neither any sign of gasket glue or something. Is that normal? Into the hub there is a lot of rust. The axle is clean from the splines to the point of the seal hub. Tomorrow I will replace the bearings, is there something that I have to be careful of?

Thanks Petros

P.S. I removed and the other axle it didn't have either. The bearing was in good contition and I put a lot of grease on it. Do I have to open it and put a washer joint (Gasket)?

Personally I think that any RTV or "the right stuff" does better than the genuine paper gaskets that go in that joint.

The paper gaskets are very thin, so if stuck to the drive flange can be very difficult to detect (especially if oil soaked and translucent). I think it would have leaked like a sieve if you didn't have anything in there.....
