Hey guys. I had my bearings repacked and my swivel ball oils changed 3 days ago. Since then I went on a road trip and noticed a problem about 1000km down the road. I've got a loud clunking/ rasp/ grind coming from my drivers side front wheel. It is less pronounced at highway speeds, and really loud at a slow coast. The problem is that i had to drive 1000km back home to the dealer. By the time i got home the noise was gone. please help Is it safe to drive? Did I wear out the splines on the axel shft completely to the point were there is no more noise? Shouldn't the dealer have noticed a problem (if bearing related) while the were packing the bearings 3 days ago? |

it sounds like the housing for the bearings was put in backwards...do you have leaking there too? |

no leaking. Just the noise. Keep in mind that the housing was not touched for the past 60k miles. Why would a backwards housing act up now? |

Emilio 1000 to 1 chance but you never know. Had a similar baffling rattle from the front offside (UK) of my Disco that came on intermittently after it had been in for a reglued fascia. Couldn't bottom it for some 18 months then found that an extra key I had added onto the ignition key ring was rattling on the bodywork by the side of the steering wheel. Stuck a small piece of foam rubber over the offending spot and now all quiet on the Disco front. |

Did they actually put oil back in the housing? Ron |

Last Saturday I had a similar noise appear when off road and the same two weeks before. It is a rasping grinding noise made worse after entering water a few times. I hope to pull the front hubs of this weekend and check bearings and CVs. Previously, I had a simlar noise that was repaired under warranty. The dealer either replaced the pinion bearing or dust cap in the front third member. I would also check the ujoints and make sure they are well greased. Emilio, start simple as Ron suggests and check to see if the front end (diff and CV housings) does indeed have oil. |
