Can you drive with your CDL engaged?

For example: In the rain on the freeway....could you engage the CDL to assist you in staying on the road while others hydro-plane off into the center divider?

Is there a maximum speed at which you may drive with the CDL engaged?

NO.

Well, yes, you drive w/ the CDL engaged, lol, but not on blacktop. Not in the rain, at least. Maybe deep snow, but, I never locked it for snow... well, except for snow-banks.

I don't speed when off-roading, so, I couldn't say what the max allowable speed would be....

FWIW...

Joe, your owners manual suggests that you never engage your CDL on anything that the wheels can't slip at least a little. What happens if the wheels don't slip is the tranny winds up and breaks.

So to answer your question, sure you can, just have the funds in the bank account to cover a tranny rebuild.

Other cars will hydroplane when these heavy Discos will still track straight. When a Disco starts to hydroplane you need to slow down, or get new tires because the CDL will not help then.

I lock and unlock mine on snow and ice covered roads all the time

even at highway speeds

with good tires such as stock it will wind up and bind on wet roads in less then a 1/2 mile

you can tell its binding because it wont engage and disengage very easy

in deep enough water to hydro-plane locking for a short period of time would not likely damage the very strong lt230

my nieghbors d2 was locked from the factory, it failed a bad broken death at 4300 miles

pretty far in my opinion...

CDL will not make the differance between hydo-planing or not. That comes down to speed, tire profile and water depth (with a few other variables of course, weight, road profile, bla ,bla, bla) In short even being fulling locked center, front and rear it would still be possible to hydo-plane.

Peter,

in fact, it can make a difference, for worse. In the borderline-traction situation, an engaged CDL may send you into a spin in a turn, just because it will force the rear and front tires to spin with the same rate (averaged across the axle). Normally, rear wheels travel the shorter distance than the fronts in the turn. So, some of the wheels would have to slip to dissipate the wind-up, and you may lose traction.

I do agree with your statement, I meant that it would not make the difference over "not hydro planing". But you bring up a good point, after all a locked diff would only make one of our many variables (wheel speed) more consistant.
