Hi gang, Here is the problem: My 96 Disco with the automatic transmission is dying on long hills. It loses power and I get a vibration in the steering wheel. This happens above 50 miles an hour going up hill on long stretches. It goes along good for a while and then it starts getting this problem. The truck has about 55K miles on it. When this happens I have to pull over, put it in park and then start again and it runs with no problems the rest of the way up the hill. If I'm not going up a big hill ( a mile or more) it runs fantastic. I just changed the fuel filter, plugs and wires, and ran a few tanks of gas with carbon cleaner. I only run super gas in it. I don't think it is a problem with the valves. I think it is the trans. when this problem occurs, the RPMs can be as high as 3000 but I'm just not going anywhere. Could it be as simple as just needing to replace the trans filter? The fluid level is full and it looks clean. Actually, the fluid level is a little high right now. I added some fluid on Saturday and the truck was awesome... no problems at all on any of the hills I usually have this problem on. On Tuesday the problem was back. No leaks as far as I can tell. Please Help!!! |

Just a quick thought - an overfilled autobox is a really bad thing. Too much fluid causes foaming and slippage. You didn't say how high the level was, but it may be one thing to look at. Bill |

Oh by the way, filled the Disco with 10 bags of mulch and it handled better than usual. That was on Saturday when all was right with the world. Also, no check engine light and the problem seems to happen if the car is cold or hot. |

I think it is your throttle position sensor. Try to floor the gas and get the trans to kick down to a lower gear. If it accelerates fine it might just be the TPS. It happened this way on mine. |

When I floor it and it kicks down sometimes it runs good. Then when it kicks up the problem returns. Other times it doesn't matter if it kicks down, I am still losing power even with the pedal floored. Also when I said the fluid was a little high its about 1/4" past the second hole on the dipstick. I know this isn't good, but the truck seemed to run a lot better after I added a little bit of fluid |

Throttle position sensor? Is that the same as the speed sensor? If not, where is it located? |

Do you run it hard once in a while? Full acceleration, floored throttle and let it upshift on it's own? This can eliminate some problems. If you feel your trans is too full then just drain the fluid only. The plug is on the bottom of the trans pan. Collect the fluid in a pan and pour it into a gallon milk jug for easy measurement. You should have between 4-5 quarts. Refill with a little less (dexron III), check the dipstick when the truck is cold. It is good to do this every 10-15,000 miles anyway. It still could be the TPS. |

Brian L, VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor, is down underneath on the tranny.... TPS, Throttle Position Sensor, is up on top of the engine, where the air enters the plenum. FWIW... -L |

No one thinks it could be a clogged filter? |

I ordered a VSS because it is probably the cheapest thing to try. On one very cold morning my speedometer didn't work for about a mile. I know the VSS controls that so maybe thats it |

It could be a fliter prob, or something more sinister.... hard to peg it EXACTLY over the internet, we can only give guidance.... -L |

I replaced the VSS....No Change. I also added some dry gas incase there was water in the tank. No luck there either. I will change the trans fluid next. I ordered the OBD-2.com package so I will be able to read any codes this weekend($130 for package with a 25ft cable). It will work on two of my other cars also, so I think it will be a great investment. I also ordered the Land Rover shop manual on CD. I found it on EBAY for $16. I'll let you know what I think of it when I get it. Never thought I would see a PC in my garage next to my red rolling toolbox. |

I have had the same problem recently. Truck ran great then would loose all power. Did not matter if you had truck in third or overdrive. Turned out to be the charcol canister/purge valve. The diapham or something broke inside it allowing it to dump fuel not fuel vapor directly into motor. I don't know great my explaination is but that is what the dealer told me. Fuel mileage has improved greatly and it fixed the problem. The canister is on the passenger wheel well. |

Kent, What was the cost of the replacement for the charcoal canister/purge valve? |

Brian, have you tried cleaning the idle control valve? It bolts into the throttle body intake. My 96 was acting similar to yours and I removed this valve, cleaned it and the surrounding area with carb cleaner and my problem went away. Might be worth trying before you buy more parts. Jeff |
