I need to replace my leaking OME front shocks (again). I checked the tech pages and it looks like all I need to do is unbolt the bottom nut, unbolt the shock towers and remove.

Is there any need for jacking? I'm not touching the springs.

No need for jacking, but it will be a little easier with the tire removed. Depending on the year, you may have to remove the air cleaner and/or the fuel evaparator canister in the process. I just unbolted my fuel evaparator canister from the mount (1 bolt) and laid it over on the side - out of the way. It's pretty easy.

Spray down all bolts with Penetrating Oil 24 hours beforehand and clean off as much junk as you can before you start. I used a big set of channel locks to keep the shock from spinning.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I figger I might as well get used to doing this operation as the OME shocks only last me a few months before leaking oil.

Jim,

If you're tearing up OME's that fast, you're doing something wrong. Is your truck stock other than the shocks?

I got about 80k on mine before I swapped for a stiffer shock. And the OMEs are still working properly.

I don't think so. Who would put woodheads on again.

Actually I do mean OME, as in Old Man Emu. All the shops and people I've spoken to say that they never have returns.

My first set was put on by a shop that went out of business... so I went to another shop. They slapped on some new ones, which promptly started leaking in about 2 months. I'll take some pix and post them for those of you who've never seen such a rarity.

Oh, and I've got one of the lucky discos that have drivetrain noise (at the rear) with the OME MD springs.

Oh, and regarding springs I have the Old Man Emu MD springs front/rear. Rear shocks look fine, and even have a few nasty looking dents in them from rocks/small mammals.

Hmm, maybe I should restate: I paid the shop to put OME MD springs on the front. Or rather my extended warranty did. I hope they did install the springs.

But now I have pretty impressive wear on the outside of my tires. I had the shop throw on the Old Man Emu bushings that are supposed to help correct the castor. Didn't help.
