Hi all, I"ve got a problem. My front half shaft on my '96 Disco had a bad U-Joint on the T-Case side so I took it in to get it replaced to a local driveline shop. I got it back yesterday and the U-Joint is looking good, but the half shaft itself is too short now. Before it would extend and shorten through the rubber piece, but now it is stuck about 1" too short. I called the guy, and he said he realigned that part because it was out of line or something like that. Now it does not move. I have tried to pull on it as hard as I can possibly pull, but no luck. Is there a way I can take this apart to see what the hell is going on in there? ANY help would be appreciated because the shop is not open on weekends and I work every hour the place is open during the week, so it has been fun already. I just want to fix my disco. I am just a beginner at auto repair, but this looked like a pretty straightforward job, so please no ridiculing.

Thanks for your help.

What he meant to say is that it was out of Phase. Its supposed to be out of phase and the shaft is keyed for it. So take it back and tell him to put the shaft back together the right way.

Damn Kev , I didnt read your post to the bottom. You are gonna have to find some way to seperate the two halves (It probably aint gonna be easy) and lign then back up the correct way. You could probably just take the shaft out , lock the center diff and drive it till you can get it back to them to fix thier fuckup...

Thanks Kyle, I'll take it back to the shop tomorrow. (It is open, but the driveline people are not there) and have them make it right on Monday again. Just for my reference, is this a LR thing, or a common driveshaft setup?

Kevin, I just got my shop manual wednesday of this week and while flipping through i noticed the phase of the drive shaft that kyle was talking about.. I dont know about other trucks, but with the disco the yokes def need to be out of phase.

cheers,

PS - I'm looking at the book now, its hard to tell exactly how much outta phase they need to be, ie how many splines off from parallel, if i had to guess from the diagram I'd say about 45 degrees. But don't hold me to that. Any experts know??

The spline are keyed so tath you dont put it together wrong. IE , there is a big space between them on one end and a fat spline on the other that fits into it..

Well sounds like some mechanic really screwed something up then if they are now in phase!

DOH!

I hope that they will fix/replace it for you!

LOL

Yup, its supposed to be out of phase! If it does not slide he screwed it up.

Can be a bitch too if it has been shoved back together wrong - depending on how hard it was forced together - the teflon coating and/or the splines themselves could be f**ed

Hope they fix their mistake for you!

Bill
