Hey guys - I just moved to the NH Seacoast. MANNNNN Is everything cheap! $18 for a 10 minute oil change and no tax anywhere! Anyway - The oil change guys can't take out my plug b/c its too big. If I bring a wrench - they'll do it -- but I don't want them hacking with an adjustable. WHAT SIZE EXACTLY IS THE OIL DRAIN PLUG - PLZ MAIL: [email protected] I hate changing oil - driving to buy it, get your stuff, change it, and drive someplace to dump your old oil isn't worth the $5 you save. THANKS!! -JA |

You don't care enough to change your own oil, and you come to a forum where we do those things ourselves, tell us what a waste and hassle it is, and then ask us for assistance. Do you see something wrong with that? And to top it off, you ask us to email it to you privately because you can't be bothered to come back here and read an answer. Maybe someone else will feel the need to help you out. -P |

Gosh Perrone, I see your point, but geez. Lighten up a little. I'll post the answer here. If he can take the time to post here, he can certainly come back to get his answer. If not, then that's his problem. The size is 29mm. It WOULD be a good idea to do your own oil changes. That way you know it's being done right, and you become more aware of your truck (at least you SHOULD be). "Become one with the Disco, one with the leaky engine, one with the frozen Diff Lock". I don't think I would want to take my car to an oil change place who can't figure out what the size of the drain plug is, or don't have a tool that fits. How do you know they have the right filter in stock? Just my 2 cents. |

for what it is worth, you should be careful with a shop that isn't familiar with Rovers enough to even have the right socket. secondly, the owner's manual indicates not removing the used (old) oil filter until you've poured in the new oil -- then replace the filter with a new one. This isn't the "normal" way most people change the oil. To be safe, you should let those guys know this. |

knowing what kind of filter and oil is sloshing around in my old tired motor is worth way more than the savings. it's literally a 10 minute job; buy the oil in gallon size jugs, get the little cheapo pump, and store the used stuff in milk-jugs until you're ready to head down - |

Thanks guys (most of you ;) ) I'll get the 29 MM -- btw -- Jiffy Lube, Valvoline, etc. did not have a wrench big enough. The cheap place I'm going is a small franchinse called PROMPTO. I'm in school, from a fam. of ten w/little ones & events EVERY weekend, and just bought a house - time is scant. Even if I did the best oil change in the world -- it would just end up on my driveway the next day anyway! ;) That's why the Brits don't make computers -- They haven't figured out how to make 'em leak oil yet You guys are great as usual, and FYI - I got a TON of email response -- as usual, and have done tons of repairs using this site - oil's too much of a hassle, too cheap, and too fleeting. Cheers. -J |

Actually, the true drain plug size is 31MM. Snap-On makes it. I am surprised nobody knew this. BTW, changing the oil sucks, and I have done it all. Why go through the hassle for $5? |

JAugusta, Sorry to be harsh, your post came off with a very different flavor. And I guess I was having a bad day. Your reasoning makes sense, but I still have reservations about a place that doesn't have a wrench in the shop bigger than 1". |

Let's face it: the average graduate of the "Oil Changers Academy" at Jiffy Lube has an IQ slightly below room temperature. The last time I took my Saab to one of these places for an oil change ONLY, they rounded off the drain plug and (despite explicit intructions to the contrary) topped off the power steering fluid with regular ATF, thus contaminating the rather expenive CHS 11s fluid this car requires. These people are just not smart enough to be trusted. I'm no mechanic by any stretch, but the least I can do is change my own oil and do it right. And a 1-1/8" wrench works fine at 29 ft.lbs. The other thing you REALLY ought to do is prime the oil pump before you start it the first time after you change the oil. You do this by filling the new oil filter with oil before you screw it on. Then disconnect the coil lead and run the starter until until the oil light goes out -- then your oil pump is certainly primed. I don't know of any Jiffy Lubes who bother to do this. ---Norm |

Hmmmm.... I've been watching this thread and I can see both sides of the argument. Like most of you, I do all my own repairs on my Rovers, and have been helping my brother Paul with a full, frame-off restoration of a Series IIA Military Lightweight that has gone on for almost two years now, but I won't change my own oil. Why? Same reasons as most of you - it's not worth it and disposal is a pain in the ass in my town. I've been going to a small local oil change shop for 16 years and they have been nothing short of excellent. They've done everything from my 65 T-Bird up to my Rovers without a problem. First time I went in there with my wife's 95, they suggested that I get a new drain plug because the previous mechanics had rounded the plug off. Those "previous mechanics" were the local LR dealership service mechanics! Good people, coffee and donuts, and they love when I bring my dog along... in short - to each his own. Ride On, Chuckster |

A good shop is worth its weight in Gold sometimes. Unfortunately, many don't have such luxuries. Here in the "Deep South", I'm lucky if the local shops know the difference between a Range Rover and a Ford Ranger. I know some of you have fought that battle before... Changing my oil gets me under the car where I check the frame condition, exhaust headers, cat converters, oil pan, look for leaks from the brake calipers, and a few other quick checks while I'm on the creeper. I guess my job and life situation affords me more time than some others here. Do what works for you... -P |

Thanks Guys -- So -- Does everyone agree I'm buying a 31 mm Wrench? I've heard 29 mm and 1 1/8". I'll get the open end and socket. The shop I'm going to was good and frank. He told me that Rover guys, Hummer guys, Willie's guys, etc. always bring him tools. The franchise provides them a toolset to cover 95% of vehicles, otherwise, they start pontificating tools ad-infinitum. They're actually cool guys - they told me all the leaks in the 89 Toyota truck too - but applauded its 209K and said "Just keep goin!" Very fair and incredibly professional (seems they get spanked if not). I'll recommend them to the best of friends. btw - my Stick gets 17/3 MPG if I lock the cruise control at 70-71 mph -- and if I go just 75 -- it gets low 15's. Bizzare. -JA |

I've used 1 1/8 wrench on mine and it works great. The 1 1/8 in socket I have won't fit because of the exhaust. Just get the wrench. And I don't know about all this mm stuff but my conversion shows that 1.125" (1 1/8) is 28.575 mm so I don't know where the 31mm came from. -P |

IT'S 29mm!!! If you buy the 31mm you'll be sorry as it won't fit. I just finished doing an oil change this past weekend and can tell you for sure it's 29mm. David |

It is 29MM. I thought it was 31MM until I actually went out to look at mine. Sorry to cause problems. I only know that it is a strange metric size and might be hard to find. Snap-On was the only place I could find one. I had to call the local rep and get him to come to my house. |

You can get a 1 1/8" wrench at any auto parts or hardware store and it works just fine. Even as much a stickler I am about using the proper tool, you're talking about less than half a millimeter. -P |

It's OK, Anonymous, by promulgating false information on the DiscoWeb you just spiked the world demand on surplus (and unneeded) 31 mm sockets. I'm sure your employer, the Snap On Corporation, will be happy -- just don't let it happen again. I'm going to be watching you... ---Norm |

Perrone: I don't know if an Range Rover Classic has the same size oil-drain plug as the Disco or not. I do really wish you would let people know that you have a Range Rover and not a Disco when you start giving advice about Disco's. It's confusing as hell. Thanks, Mike B. |

The mechanical similarities are so extensive that Classic advice IS DI advice. He always makes notes of the limits of any dissimilarity, ie not recommending Diesel info when IC petrol is the architecture. P, keep up the good work. My guess is that you won't find specs for Freelander in his history. Get used to the fact that 80-90's era LR are virtually same package, packaged differently. Under the skin, same same. Extensive interchangability. That is precisely why they- Discos-are affordable. All the development and engineering was done for the Discos, the RR legacy. |

I guess the D1 Oil drain plug is a diffrent size than the D2`s. I just changed my Oil in my D2 yewsterday and it used a #15 metric socket which I asume is a 15mm(and yes I took off the right bolt). Now I don`t understand why a mechanic would not have the proper size socket. Any good mechanic or shop should have a complete set of sockets and wrenches right. I mean even Old Joes fix it shack has full sets, what kinda tards are trying to change your oil??? christ didn`t they even have a adjustable laying around?? |

Mike, The part # for a Disco oil pan and the RR oil pan are the same. The motor is the same. Therefore the same size drain plug. Same with the Defender. You act like my RR is the only truck I wrench. When there is possibility of differences I try to give notice that my advice is slanted toward RRs unless I have direct knowledge of something else. -P |

Guys, The shops I go to are "by the book" types. Meaning, due to potential liability, they will not use an adjustable,, so as to prevent round-off's, etc. The reason they don't have the huge wrenches is because our trucks are far better and brawnier than 99% of the market. Ever see the faggy little lug nuts on an F-350 Deisel! What the heck! They're like 3/4" or a hair bigger!? Anyway, due to the franchise business model - they won't invest in more tools than economically reasonable from a cost-benefit analysis. thus = we're screwed. The guys at Prompto in NH are cool, smart, and fair. They point out all the problems - but push nothing on you!? Air filt., coolant, rear main seal leaks (GF's toyota), whatever - then they say "It has 206K on it! KEEP GOING!!!" Anyway, I have to give credit where due. I'm the idiot that bought a vehicle tries to force you into the LR Dealership collective if you have other weekend hobbies (boat, house, hiking) and can't live only to work on them. Other fair shop is valvoline. Do a web search for "Valvoline coupon" & you get a $5 coupon. I'll get the 29MM for my 96 Disco I Petro. Thanks! -JA |
