Hello gents. I recently (2 weeks ago) got a 1996 Disco with 81K miles. Today I started changing all of the fluids etc so I can create a baseline for maintenance intervals .. as everything I have read here says the Discos are great but you have to stay on top of the maintenance. I even got the factory service manual earlier this week. Today I changed the front diff fliud, oil and filter, and drained the transmission and added new fluid. While under the engine I noticed that near what appears to be the oil cooler lines is alot of oil .. looks like oil has been spraying abit. I'm not 100% sure but is this a common failure? I have wiped the area down in hopes of spotting the leak. Here's the problem, my wife is all excited about driving to her mother's tomorrow (in the Disco), which is about a 3 hour drive, I really dont feel comfortable sending her and her sister off without completely finishing the Disco's maintenance. (I am a bit anal ). SO I am just being unduly paraniod? And yes I do love my wife dearly so I don't wish for her to become stranded. I know a some leaks are normal ... is this one of those normal leaks? Thanks again! Discoweb ROCKS! |

That's normal....sounds bad but it is. It's usually the valley gasket that leaks. Check the oild halfway to your mums, then you'll know how fast it goes... usually never more than a quart every 3k miles... Just my experience.. andy |

Let me clarify, the oil cooling lines that originate next to the oil filter and terminate in the radiator are what appear to be leaking (one if them). I will know more in the am. The problem is: I will not be driving with them. I think I'm just going to have them take the Honda until I have finished my PM on the Disco. Cheers, bender2033 |

I had the same problem with my '95, and I spoke to my local independent shop about it. Seems that the issue stems from the factory crimps from the hardline to the flexible one--not good enough. He was offering to sell me ones he's had made up that are better than stock for $80 apiece, versus the Stealership's $120. I decided to go to the people that make the hoses for the buses where I work and they cut off the hardlines and re-manufactured the whole hose with high-heat, high-pressure(steel-braided)hose with a Nomex(flame-proof)cover! Overkill, I know! But he only charged me $60 for BOTH hoses! So, if you live in a city with an industrial-type hose builder (mine was Emrick & Hill) it might be beneficial to call them up or take in the hoses. Matt |
