I test drove a 2002 SE7 the other day and man, I'm in love. I took a test drive three years ago, but this time the nice saleslady took me on the little hill course and did the 2 wheel frame twist. It was very impressive. Unfortunately I think I was spoiled by the interior on the 2002 model. I seem to recall the 95-96 model I drove before being much more bland and utilitarian inside. Also, I felt I could really rest my arm on the windowsill, but I seem to remember the doors on the earlier models being really thin, so you couldn't rest your arm up there. Does anybody know if there's an overview of Discovery model year changes online somewhere?

Also, the SE's seem to have armrests now, and I was wondering if it's possible to retrofit armrests onto an older model truck. Thanks!

Utilitarian is good.

I agree, utilitarian is good. I wouldnt trade my 96 and 97 for a DII anyday. I would be afraid of getting the interior dirty.

Jeff, I too was looking at the D1 and D2 models when I was buying my Disco. The D2 is a little bit bigger and a little more plush. I opted for the 99 Disco 1 SD. It had a more options standard (leather and heated seats). The Disco 2's that I looked at were about $7,000-$8,000 more and had cloth seats. I know some people would not care, but I like the leather. If you want to know all the differences between the two model I suggest going to Carpoint on MSN and comparing the two.

What kind of Popeye arms do you have where you can't rest them on the door? A meek mortal such as myself doesnt have too much trouble. Ditto what the rest said. I would be afraid of scratching the leather (not that my leather isnt scratched, but you know what I mean!). Besides, if comfort is your main objective, get a BMW X5 or that Lexus thing or Mercedes M, etc., etc.

Comfort isn't my main objective, but if I'm going to be spending $11k, it would be nice to have a little bit of comfort. My last car I paid $5k for and didn't have any 'luxury' features at all. My car before that was an 85 Pontiac 6000 with nearly 200k miles on it, and barely had mechanical features. I'm basing my memories of the 94-95 models off a not-so-great test drive 3 years ago that the Land Rover salesguy didn't seem very interested in, so I'd just like to know how things have changed and how every model year stacks up. I appreciate the feedback, Mike.

I have a 96 SD and I was also interested in buying a new one, but luckily I got to drive a 2002se7 for about a week and I fell in love with my 96 all over again. the turning radius is gone on the newer truck because of the lentgh and I didn't feel a 20,000 dollar difference in the power or handling... yes the interior was very nice but again I am not about to pay 30+ K for nice interior.. and I have no idea what you are talking about with not being able to rest your arm on the window of your door.. my truck is the most solid car I have ever been in????

happy 96 owner..glad that I didn't trade up ..I would have been very dissapointed...

I just want to know if the door width has changed! I don't have huge arms, I have normal computer-guy/programmer arms! Right now I'm trying to decide between a 94-96 or a 97-98. The former I can afford, the latter I can afford if I only eat ramen for the next year and a half.

The ramen may not be that bad, you can break up the routine with mac and cheese. But I would recommend getting a 99 or higher. That way you can get a certifed used rover. That has saved me money on minor repairs, like the window falling off it's track. Just my opinion. Good luck, I hope you love yours as much as I love my 99 Disco 1.

If he can find a certified '99 for $11M, I'd like his contact so I can have a few in different colors!

Dobie Disco, it's just Monday, but your comment is so far the best joke I have heard
this week.:-)

"...normal computer-guy/programmer arms!" LOL, Oh shit that's funny.

I also have NC-GPA and the sills on my 95 D1 fit them just fine and the standard center console is just squishy enough.

LOL

"The former I can afford, the latter I can afford if I only eat ramen for the next year and a half."

Don't buy a disco unless you can either fix and service it yourself or afford to pay someone big bucks to fix and service it for you.

my 2 cents

I would go with a newer one with the 4.0. Ramen isn't that bad.

Be sure you have something set aside for repairs, though. Second owner usually gets the shaft:
-First owner trades in when things are starting to go bad.
-Second owner spends his life savings fixing everything back up and spends all of his time convincing his friends that ANY vehicle would have that break around that many miles on the odometer. Second owner finally gives in to peer/financial pressure and sells the troublesome vehicle to third owner, who doesn't have to fix anything because second owner already did that.

Yes the 2002 is sweet, but did you guys (or gals) see the new 2003? a HOT front end and a new 4.6ltr V-8 with 220hp and 300lb torque (I'm guessing it's the Range Rover's engine.

At the bottom of page you'll see the link for the 2003 Disco

That 2003 is very nice, but I'd be too worried about taking it off road. Maybe the wife will go for it, and I can keep my 97 for the trails.
For anyone looking at getting a new one, I'd hold out for the '03 model.
