Sorry Im new to this. If i drive around town in 3rd all week long would I damaged my transmission?
Will it affect the fuel consumption? Im used to using "D". Thanks for your advice.

I have a 94 d1

it gets about 2 MPG better 12 vs 10 in 3rd around town.

the owners binder that came in mine says to drive it in 3rd around town so it wont hurt it I' guess

Naw, no damage - you'll know if you're overrevving that thing. Third does just what it says - keeps your tranny in 3rd as opposed to upshifting to 4th. I use it sometimes when in traffic to use engine braking and also to provide a little more pep - kind of like race car mode, then I remember what I'm driving and just slap it back to 4th.

3rd is also a good choice for heavy (at capacity) towing... our 4th's are really too tall for tow duty.

sir robin,

great point!!

mercedees using a similar ZF style trans recommends only towing in 3rd due to heat build up when the torque converter slips in 4th gear.

i did not see anything about it in the LR binder but I'd bet its very similar
