I have a '94 disco with a 5 spd gearbox. The diagram in the shop manual does not do too good a job illustrating the location of the drain and refil plugs on that tranny. Before I go messin'...I just wanted an outside opinion of what I'm looking at (sorry no pics...still don't have a digital camera!).

I think I see the fill plug (looks like any other on the x-fer box; diffs, etc.) pretty high up on the side of the tranny, but is the drain plug located on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel? There is a large bolt (larger than the oil pan drain bolt) on the passenger side of the tranmission....is that it? What size socket would I have to put on that?!? Or am completely missing the target here?

As a side note....what type of tranny fluid would you recommend? The book calls for Dexron IID...Valvoline makes a Dexron III...but it does not list it as a replacement for the IID...just the IIE & II, etc....

Finishing up a 90k service.....any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

I'm getting ready to do this on my R380 ('95 Disco) tonight. Both the drain and fill plugs are on the right side. You'll need a T55 Torx socket for the filler plug. However, whoever designed the fill hole position was surely a sadist. Your job will be MUCH easier if you get a pump aparatus from your local auto parts store to pump the fluid in. Trying to pour it in, even with the valve/tube aparatus is a major pain in the ass, especially if your oil bottle is on the squat side, like Amsoil's.

I've been using Amsoil ATF synthetic, which is highly rated and feels pretty smooth, but it may be a little TOO slick for the synchros to engage properly on a manual tranny. I'm switching over to Red Line MTL synthetic, which is apparently formulated specifically for manual trannies, so will see how that works.

I changed all of my diffs/t-case/swivels whis weekend .. it wouldve been impossible without the $6 fluid pump I got at NAPA. Do yourself a favor and get one!

You can replace the torx head plug with an earlier external square plug out of an LT77 (I did but maybe some space limitations on a disco?)

Yes the drain plug is huge.

Thanks much for the info! Good call on the pump....if left up to me...I would have thought about a pump right after I drained all of the tranny fluid out...

Thank you all!

Check out this pump. I bought my first one about 12 years ago, it lasted about 7 years. I'm on my second. This is absolutely the easiest way to pump fluid into a trans., diff, or transfer box.
It plugs onto your battery.
