Looks like the "Series Tech Discussion" gets a posting once every two months, so please excuse this momentary non-Disco discussion... I want to ship a Series (probably Series I) from the UK. I would prefer to find the truck out of the classifieds in the Land Rover pubs rather than deal solely with the inventory of an importer. Anyone have any experience with this? Recommendations? Sources? Pitfalls? Estimate of cost to do so? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

if you're going to use this on the road make sure it is DOT compliant or else you will be in for a lot of hassles. I am importing a motorcycle now and it's been a total nightmare getting it through customs. not sure of a car cost, but my shipping was $450 from japan to california, which I think this fairly cheap. there will be other fees also for bringing it in, and possibly will have to pay a freight forwarder to help you. if you want to claim it as offroad use only, there is additional paperwork to fill out, but this will get you past a lot of the DOT troubles. my advice would be to check with customs BEFORE you begin to import something. tell them what you want to bring in. they can look it up and give you an idea of what lies ahead. keep in mind if for whatever reasons customs won't let it in, the truck will sit only for a short time at the port before being transferred as "illegal cargo" right into a government impound yard. you'll have a daily storage fee to deal with while you TRY and get it in. |

forget that before crap once they have your number they can mess with you real good...customs keeps good records. i'v imported a few BMW's step one buy a used car declare it as a collector vehicle register it to an address in a non air managment zone. then let a vehicle importer, import it to that address. the purchase transaction should be complete before the importation to avoid all the transfer inspections. just make sure you have a policy on it up front. the collector status is the ticket it circumvents all the crash compliance and emmissions stuff some states then limit its miles per year but then again thats a tough thing to check . more a problem if you try to sell it. the new owner may not be able to register it untill the miles jive. they may also need to bring it up to crash/emmision complience at that point when it leaves your personal collection. also they must be private collection vehicles, if you try to register it to a company name customs may come looking for it. my buddie got his FJ75 deported because he made a paper work mistake . customs came looking a year later!...took another year to get it back all legal if your really gonna keep it , importation can be easy ...when you only have a short term intrest ...ie profit...it gets much more complicated. |

Musky, It isn't quite that hard, I import around 10 Rovers a year, legally. All are over 25 years old so the paperwork is simple. You just fill out the DOT and EPA forms and have a customs broker handle the rest of the paperwork. You will need the V5 (UK Title) and a bill of sale. The key is to not try to sneak something newer than 25 years over, that's when the problems can arise. Since Ned is talking about a Series 1, it's gonna be at least 40 years old. Unless You are looking at a Hybrid S1 David |

I was by no means talking about sneaking. i was talking about any year vehicle but must be used and have been registered . can be imported legal and simple as a collector. customs broker, freight forwarder, importer, call it what you will. that was my point totally, let a pro that knows the actual logistics handle the shipping and dock declarations. it also very much depends on the vehicle. some just cant be brought in for true use on highways but still can be brought in as a collector vehicle. Ned, see thats the coolest part of Discoweb now you got a guy that can get you what you want...so I agree with Ron ignore Me |

Hi Muskyman, I was not trying to be mean I just did not want poor Ned thinking it was really hard. Ned wants a series so while you're right as far as bringing in newer truck its just not necessary, 25 plus and you don't have to do anything. Just have the title, pay your import taxes (2.5% I think) and you are good to go.

How about a D-90 or 110? What if you are military and stationed over there, then move back here? |

Greg, There used to be a military exemption of 1 vehicle that you own in a forign country could be brought in but not any more. You can not bring in a 90 or 110 easily. It has been done questionably, and you always run the risk of having it impounded, and suffer severe fines, not to mention legal hassels and fees. Ned, I will respond to your email. David |
