I am needing a new power steering pump for my 98 disco. Mine knocks like a diesel but without the added fuel economy and the ability to drive through deeper water! I can get one for $315 plus shipping from discountrovers or a used one for $210 shipped from rovercannibal. Any suggestions? I am a little concerned about purchasing used engine parts. Plus, the guys at discountrovers have been really helpful thus far.
Thanks
Chad

Man, mine just died too! I still have some warranty left, so hopefully the dealer will take care of it. Let us know what you decide.

Given that so many of these things are dying, I'd go with Discount Rovers for a new one. I remember reading about someone who rebuilds them and corrects the design flaw in the process. I can't remember who right now. Maybe searching the archives will help.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Yeh, my warranty died 4 weeks before the pump. I got no help from the dealer! They wanted $1000 installed.

Meridian rebuilds pumps. Their boxes are better but I don't know that the pump is in any way superior. Make sure the one you get is genuine as this is not something where I would be ok with a generic. Anyone knowwho the OEM for PS pumps is?

I am pretty sure they are ZF pumps.

Meridian Rebuilders is in San Diego.
They do a fine job, I haven't needed the ps pump (yet) but that's the way to go, $300 or so.
cheers- doug

No contact info here, but bought a pump from them in January. Works great (knock on wood) still have a leak elsewhere so Lucas Stop Leak is on the way.

Thanks for the input, but I am trying to find out if saving $100 is worth purchasing a used ps pump ($210 used vs $315 new). Also, why would you spend $300 on a rebuilt pump when discountrovers sells the LR original for $315...brand new?

Several reasons it is too costly to rebuild them and the quality could not be maintainted to Meridians high satndards

So buy a new one, just make sure it is ZF (now that you remind me that is the OEM for the pumps)

I Have one in my Disco. Supposedly Meridian adds a second bearing on the shaft to reduce strain/wobble/wear. I does not leak any more, but now the PS pump is getting weak. Any bolt-on aftermarket units that are compatible with both the ZF/Meridian box AND have enough output to properly power a Milemarker Hydralic winch?

Rich: There isn't a pump that is compatible with the steering box and will properly power a Milemarker. Go to http://www.4x4winches.com/zf.html. They sell higher rated ZF pumps. The problem is that the steering boxes won't take the psi of the pump, so you have to add a pressure relief valve to lower the pressure to the steering box. They recommend swapping out the hydraulic motor to a lower capacity motor so that the end result is about 9500lbs. pull.

Other than that the best option is to add a pto operated pump. It will give you more options for line speed and also its a completely seperate system. So if you have a hydraulic problem from winching you at least have your steering intact. Downside: costly.

I think someone on this board was planning on adding a saginaw pump to the disco to power the Milemarker, but I haven't seen any follow-up. The Saginaw would be interesting since it puts out 1500psi which is what is recommended for the Milemarker, but there is obviously some mounting issues.

I'm still working on a mounting assembly. I have figured it out, just need to get the damned contractors out to put up a building-if it ever stops raining. I could really use a set of hoses to cobble with, though.

Expected completion date late summer.
