My 99 Discovery II does not have a CD player. The Land Rover dealer wants $750. I'm not into a cd changer. Any advise ? Thanks.

Hi Laura,

Go to http://www.autotoys.com - go into their 'shop'. Search for Land Rover. They've got an aftermarket alpine cd changer kit w/ a blitz converter and all cables for 269.95 delivered.

I put one of these in my 2001 DII last year and it works like a champ. All controls , including steering wheel controls, work great with it.

I got the CD changer installed by the dealer at the last minute before I took home my 2002 DII.

I rolled the cost into the lease to avoid having to shell out the $850 my dealer wanted at a later date.

Got to say, I'm a pretty happy camper.

NOTE: the dealer was back ordered on the data link cable - I found one at Atlantic British and had the dealer purchase and complete the install. Had I not found that cable, I might still be waiting for the install. If you go with the dealer, ask if they have the data cable in stock.

Good luck.

At purchase my dealer estimated $1000 for the complete install. They said that my SD does not have the cable routed to the steering wheel control.

Tom, does this sound right? I was thinking that all I had to do was route a cable from the changer to the head unit.

I paid Denver South $350 for my changer plus the cable. Sounds like I must have stopped in on a good day ($850-1000? Yikes!).

Paul, installation instructions are here -

two things
first Laura said she's not into the cd changer so that is out of the picture also the after market changer with blitz cable will not work on radios with DSP the only way to go is a in dash cd but you will lose sterring wheel controls.

When I was researching stereo set up possibilities I was told by four different shops that I would have to re-wire the speakers if I used a non-LR head unit. Supposedly LR wiring doesn't work and play well with aftermarket head units.

Could be BS, but if it is, it was wonderfully orchestrated BS between four unaffiliated shops. Just a heads up for possible additional costs.

This is true as the LR uses amps in it's audio systems many cars do. The thing is you can't amplify an already amplified signal. So you have to wire directly to the speakers to by-pass the amp. It's very common it just requiers a little extra work.(and a little extra money) The main down side is you will lose steering wheel function and if you have rear head phones they won't work either.
