How often should the spark plugs and wires be replaced or checked? If you read the Magnecor 'truth about ignition wire', they claim that the factory-installed carbon wires degrade over time, and should be replaced regularly. I just had Land Rover, Mission Viejo FAX me over the maintenance schedule for my truck, and nowhere does it list replacing the wires. Furthermore, the above maintenence schedule does not include ever checking the plugs (gap or gunk), but simply replacing them every 60k miles. How often do you guys replace/inspect your wires and plugs? |

I put many miles on my truck in a fairly short period of time-as a result, I change my oil and rotate my tires far more often than most. Same with plugs. The Haynes manual for my '95 Disco (stop laughing you guys) lists the spark plug replacement frequency at either 12,000 or 24,000 miles. I am replacing mine at 12,000, every fourth oil change. I have Magnecor wires and expect to get a few years out of them. Being the ultimate CB, I use the cheapest plugs I can find, Autolite # 65s. At my frequency of changing, I believe I am probably replacing them at about the right frequency. Many will sing the praises of much more expensive plugs, but again, I don't expect to leave them in very long. FWIW, when I went to install my Magnecors, I found a broken plug wire-these were factory wires that had fewer than 5,000 miles on them. Yes, the factory wires are junk! Magnecors are not without their faults, but for the money, they seem to be the best. I went through two sets of Mallory's and a set of Bosch, all three of which were purported to fit, but none of them didn't. The Magnecors did! I have had to re-crimp one of my Magnecors after pulling the boot from it. Peace, Paul |

I just ordered the Magnecors and will be installing them tonight. As far as the plugs go I was not sure when the last time they were replaced since i just bought the truck a few months ago so i decided to go ahead a replace them. I installed the Bosch Copper core plugs. At $.99 a piece from Pep Boys I couldn't refuse. We'll see if my factory wires are shot. More than likely they are. They look pretty bad in there. Later |

Jacobs? I don't think much of them. I saw them and didn't think they were so hot. My wheeling buddy said he ordered them and installed them and his old stock ones were smoother so he returned them and bought Magnecors instead. I'm running Magnecors 8mm and am happy with them. - |

I am also running Magnecors (the KV85's...probably above and beyond what I'll ever need), and I'm trying the Bosch +Fours for the first time. So far, everything is great, no missing at any RPM, and the Disco is running better than before...however, I attribute that to replacing the distributor vaccum advance hose! |

I had the Jacobs 8.5mms on my 95 Disco and was briefly impressed. They ran the idle smoother than worn stock wires...for a while, but they were impossible to fit in the brackets and came apart when trying to pull them off the plugs (even when installed with dielectric grease) They were eventually nibbled through in several places by local woodrats. I have the 8.5mm Magnecors on my wife's 91 Rangie and they are much nicer. Bigger improvement in response than the Jacobs, lower price AND they actually fit (snugly) in the brackets. I will soon be getting another set (8mm) for the Disco. Also, the Magnecors are MUCH quieter as far as radio interference goes. |
