I know this is going to sound really stupid, but I will risk the ridicule. Since the Disco is all time 4 wheel drive, do you still have to rotate the tires? If so how often? Thanks for indulging my stupidity.

one of the reasons to rotate tires is to prolong the life do to increased wear on the front tires as a result of steering, not because they are on the drive axels.

Rover recommends that you leave them alone. I found they wore pretty evenly with no rotation.

Mike,
I don't know about the disco1, but both LR and the tire manufacturers recommend even more frequent rotation than usual on my disco2. They recommend rotating them every 6k miles or so. Even though their are 4 driving wheels, the front ones will wear quicker and develop ridged blocks due to more braking load on the front wheels. I think it is a good idea to rotate them often.

My service adviser told me to rotate them far more frequently and NOT to leave them alone. The service department at my local dealer is very competent and not your typical "stealership".

You can only rotate front to back and not across.

My first set of tires wore in such a way as render each bit of tread as a wedge, in the direction of travel. I would immagine this is from breaking force, and so I would want to rotate diagonally. Why can I not do this Ron?

I work for Michelin, and asked around. Evidently that 'no side to side' rule was true with early radial tires. The plys would 'set' in a particular direction, and changing the direction would lead to degraded ride quality. With newer radials, however, that is not the case. I always rotate mine cross-wise.

My DII manual doesn't even address tire rotation I don't think. However, my dealer told me it wasn't necessary on the DII and that it shouldn't be done, although I think I will rotate my new goodyear mt/r's front to back on 3k to 6k intervals.

I visualize the tire rotation while in full lotus position. Less work with the same end results.

I, for one, don't believe in tire rotation. Think of how long it takes for a new set of tires to "set" after they're installed. By rotating them, whatever you might gain by getting all four tires to wear "evenly" is offset by the tires needing to adjust to their new positions every time you rotate them. Some manufacturers recommend NOT rotating tires for this reason. Just my .02...

Yep, rotate. I didn't and I'm sorry.

Rotate every 3rd oil change, that's a good reminder for your maint schedule. Also, if your tire requires higher PSI, inflate, if you are more inclined to increased tire-life than ride and comfort.

Well thanks for all the input. I think that the "rotates" have it.

Why can I not do this Ron?

Because when you do they will get louder (due to the wedges). If you did them every 500-7500 MAYBE you would be ok but you do not want to pay for that or do that.

My '01 Disco II has ACE component. The tire pressure are different in the front and the rear. I usually rotate them at every 7500 miles. I notice they wear unevenly from the rear and front.

well hows this for a whammy

the axles have the same shocks on each side but yet the axles are way heavier on the diff side

diff side tires will get thye wacky blocks faster because of being under shocked

bad shocks makes it even more evident

so now how should you rotate?
