When I lock my center dif-lock the light on the dash does not light up any more. I just tried a hill climb and it seems that I am not getting the traction from more than one tire and I just put new mud terrains on today! . What can I do to see if it is working or not (Besides going somewhere to spin out). What should I check?

Aaron,

are you sure you lock it? How do you do it?

Your light could just be burned out.

Peter I put it in neutral push the shifter to the left and up or down and it sounds like its engaging into something but I dont feel that I am getting 4 wheel drive.

Try moving the diff lock lever and jogging the trans in and out of gear

Your truck is full-time four-wheel drive?

Well it seems that my discovery's 4 wheel drive is working, the problem is that it just can't make it up that hill! My friend went up the same hill with a Nissan Pathfinder...NO PROBLEM AT ALL...so I let him drive my discovery and he couldn't get up either!!! I'm beginning to believe that these vehicles aren't good for much unless you modify the hell out of them.

I don't think your diff-lock is engaging aaron...
Are you able to select low-range ok?
Craig

ps... Albert, all NAS rigs are permanent four wheel drive (freelander excluded(permanent AWD)).

Aaron,

Your diff lock is probably not engaged. I had lots of problems with my 97. Once I was able to engage the diff...while going up hill under load the trans sounds different and i can tell it is working. Have someone watch while you are going up the hill. When you get to the point where you get stuck have your friend watch. If the diff is NOT engaged only one wheel will spin. Probably the front. If you are engaged you will get one front and one rear spinning at the same time. My guess is your cdl. I was discouraged when I first bought mine because my cdl was not working even though the light was on. I was the only one that had to be towed up a particular hill. I 4x4 for three months not knowing my truck wasn't working properly. Once I figured it out and got it fixed I could go places that other locked up vehicles had trouble getting through. There are lots of people on this board that have had cdl problems, and usually it is an easy fix. Let us know when you determin the problem. Also check some of the other posts about center diff lock.

good luck

Try this:

lock you CDL. Then put the ´gearbox in "N".
then lift ONE wheel with a jack so that it could turn - if it could be turned around THEN in fact you have havent locked the CDL.

I have a 97 also. I put it in N, pull the CDL into the center, then put the Rover in R and push the CDL left and forward. That gets be in Low/lock...

You can't be serious! A stock Discovery of any age is far better equipped for off-road use than any Pathfinder. If working properly, your '97 DI is a pretty diserable truck. Sounds like you have a CDL problem Aaron.

I think you will find the centre diff lock linkage has become stiff and not moveing through its full travel. Crawl under with the WD40 whilst someone moves the lever. See how it moves and "assist" it with your hand, then spray with the WD40. It will free up and move in and out of engagement. Lack of use causes the fault. Hope this works and you can enjoy your Disco to the full.
