I hope somebody can help me. I just bought a 97' disco. It has been well maintained and has 78k. The truck stalls out, and the clock seems to reset itself and the stereo goes to safe mode. If the radio is on and you switch on the headlamps or the signals, there will be a pop sound thru the speakers. I think it is obviously a power supply problem, the battery is a new optima and all battery terminals are clean and tight. My friend drove it once and said it would not restart till the drivers door was shut?!? It is intermittent. also I average @ 10 miler per gallon, is this normal? I am in So Cal, it has no rust, or corrosion issues.

Sorry to hear you are having these problems. Unfortunately, I can only tell you that 10 per gallon are not unusual, Land Rover is notorious for sucking at that. I am also in Southern California (Santa Clarita Valley). If you are interested in some off-roading, send me an e-mail to keep you posted on the next run we are NOT a club, just a bunch of guys having fun.

Electrical problem...maybe a ground. Alternator?
Check battery connections, tight?

Should be better than 10mpg city driving.

check the main positive battery lead (the big cable) - terminal may look fine, but the cable itself may have issues.

Shawn,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. You definitely are experiencing a loss of electrical power completely (like if the battery was disconnected). Check as many grounds as you can find. Check the battery cables as Blue said. Also, check the connections on the back of the alternator. Does this power interruption happen when you hit bumps? Or is it at idle when parked?

Shawn,

Have your alternator and voltage regulator checked out (at 78K you could be nearing the end of life on them). Be sure to check your grounds as well (I had problems with all the above at 90K). The following is from the British Pacific website for 94-96 disco, it might help you locate the grounds on your 97 too.
Ground-based electrical Problems - Troubleshooting
Vehicle - Discovery 1994-1996

Poor grounds can cause numerous problems on 1994 - 1996 Discoverys. The following are main ground locations and the components they effect. To clean the contact surface, remove the fastener and use a wire brush to clean the post, connector and nut as needed. Spraying on a little contact cleaner may help, too. If the contact point is painted, a star washer can also be added to improve the connection.

Check these ground locations:

1. Right inner fender, behind the battery. Battery and EMC on 1994 & 1995 models.

2. Below the battery, inside the right frame rail. Battery ground.

3. Right of the left cylinder head. ECU, AC compressor clutch on 1994 & 1995 models.

4. Right frame rail, inside wheel well. Starter.

5. Left footwell, behind trim panel. ECM, key switch, radio, OBDII data link.

6. Right footwell, behind trim panel. Starter solenoid relay, park-neutral position switch, alarm, data link connector.

7. Left side of luggage compartment, behind access panel for taillights, above light assembly. Fuel pump, fuel level sensor.

10 MPG? Not good. My 96 gets about 13.5-15 in town, and about 19 on the Freeway.

19 on the highway? Do you drive mostly downhill?
