I have a '96 Disco and the left rear window motor no longer actuates the window. (I can hear the motor when I push the window switch.) I assumed that this was either a broken gear on the motor, or a broken regulator, and have obtained one of each. The problem is, once I got the panel and water barrier off the door, things were not how they looked in the Factory maintenance manual, or the Haynes book. Fortunatly the motor I ordered looks like the one installed in the door, instead of the one pictured in Haynes, but it is not mounted anywhere near the way that the books have it pictured. My questions are.. 1. With the version that I have, does the entire regulator need to be removed before the motor can be changed? 2. If so, how? 3. Also, what kind of fasteners are holding the motor in, they look like hex-headed screws with a Torx center. What size hex socket would fit (I found that 10mm is too big, and 9mm is to small), or is a tool for the interior socket needed (torx? hex? something else?). If so what? This project is one of those that seemed very easy if the manuals looked anything like reality, but appears to be quite a bit more complicated. Any help, PLEASE!!! Thankis, Wendell Cotton |

I have found the problem with my rear window. The regulator is held into the window trac by a plastic guide. This has broken. Does anyone know the part# for this. Any suggestions in getting the regulator back into trac would be great too. Thanks, Ken |

Here are a few answers I was able to come up with. The regulator on my '96 Disco is the "short" model. Evidently in the realm of window repair, this makes it a rqather rare (Interim??) model. I am not sure of the part number, but once described as non-standard, Nathan Crabtree seemed to know exactly the one needed. I am presently waiting on that part to arrive. (Just ordered it yesterday.) Though the motor can be removed without removing the regulator, it is a real PITA. It is much easier to remove the locking servo, then remove the two regulator mounting screws that are not "slot-mounted". Slack off the two "Slot-mounted" ones, and with the nylon slide that Ken described being broken, the regulator slides right out. I will let you know how easy it is to put back in when that happens. With my rig, evidently what happened is that the nylon slide broken, it allowed the motor to wind past the gear quadrant on the regulator. This created an instant "down" mode for the window.
