Does anybody know something about / has some experince with the Wrangler AT/R. Its supposed to share the (side-)wall structure with the MT/R.
And must be on the market for a while - but the even the goodyear homepage does not know it.

All I know about Wranglers is from when I used to use a Jeep Cherokee (for work). They scared the hell out of me in the rain and skid like crazy when I hammered the brakes (when towing a boat). In my opinion, one of the most inferior tires out there and one that you couldnt pay me to use.

Wow, that is crazy, but I guess everybody has different experiences. I could not disagree more and I have been happy with all of the different Goodyear tires I have tried. The MTRs being my favorite.

Jarrod, I'm sure everyone has different experiences, but the govt agency I used to work for had a contract with Goodyear, so the wranglers were the only thing we could use on trucks. I once was travelling about 35 mph (towing an 18ft boat) and had to take evasive action. I left at least 20 ft of skid marks (not just on the road :)) and could not stop. I had to control my skid until the last moment, release the brake and jump into the next lane. within inches of the object in front. This type of driving was almost common (maybe its just that type of vehicle and tire combo?) Regardless of rain or sunshine. I aged at least 20 years driving on those tires. In the rain, I didnt need a boat to make me slide. Eventually, I refused to tow a boat in the rain. Just recently an ex-fellow employee (I no longer work there) was cut off, and skid his Ford Expedition (on wranglers) across at least 30 ft, rammed the offending car, and killed it's passenger, sending my ex-fellow employee to the hospital drenched in blood with 2 broken legs. Use them if you want, everyone's got an opinion. I've seen more bad than good with those tires.

There are a few different models of the "Wrangler" and I know one that is without a doubt a piece of shit tire - comes standard on jeep wranglers. I have only had good experiences with Goodyear, because I have never used that particular tire. I can't remember the name on it right now, it is the "Wrangler (then 3 initials)" and the outside of the tire has a filled in tread design for longer wear. Is this, by chance, the tire that you have used and had such bad luck with. This would make sense since it is such a common tire.
You're not knocking goodyear because of one tire design are you?

Believe it or not, I am not employed by Goodyear and certainly not arguing with you - just trying to figure out how we have had such different experiences.

I am using the Goodyear MT/R's in 235/85 on my DII and couldn't be more pleased. I find that they are very grippy on the road, both accelerating and stopping, and that they handle extremely well in wet conditions.

Maybe since it was a government contract, they were getting the special rip the goverment off with $600 hammers version of the tires..... You know, the ones that show you how much they care about you....

? Is the tire you´re thinking of under those shown ?

Well, not all G. tires can be junk. The Eagle GT4+ (wasn´t it) was used on stock Discos. And was higly rated by the LRO Magazine in an early test (road tire category).

I think I know which Wrangler-Tire you mean, Jarrod. But the AT/R is new and has a totally different tread design. Don´t know whether for the good or bad.
? Nobody driving the AT/R ??????

As you mentioned the MT/R. I like its look (though performance is more important). How are your on-road impressions (especially wet or icy roads, braking), please tell me
An off-road magazine of my country recently tested the Goodyear MT/R, Goodrich MT, Mickey Thompson, Interco SuperSwamper and ProComp - all Mud tires and on a Jeep Wrangler TJ. Best off road was the goodrich though the loudest on road. Best braking on road the ProComp I think though not so good off road. quietest on road was the swamper.
The MT/R was second to the goodrich off road, but in braking discipline it was last - to my surprise, perhaps both arguably due to its very stiff sidewall which on the other hand should make it the most resistent off road (was so stiff that the tire -not mounted on a rim- wasn´t compressed a bit by a person sitting on it, they wrote. Therefore airing down has less effect on traction. (I could supply details (numbers) if anyone wishes).

I had Goodyear Wrangler tires on a Dodge Durango that I owned. They were the worst tires I ever owned. They wouldn't balance out worth a shit, terrible traction and way overpriced. My suggestion is to stay away from the Wranglers!!

I like my MT/Rs.. Wrangler GSAs though are a huge piece of junk.

My DII came with Goodyear Wrangler HP's on it.... 255/65/16 I think. 29" tires. I drove the first 4000 miles on them. I put the MT/R's on 235/85/16 about 1300 miles ago after I lifted the Disco. I didnt' get the opportunity to drive them on snow/ice as it was already spring when I changed. I have had them off road and in heavy rain and they performed flawlessly in both. My impression of the Goodyear MT/R (newest version) is that they are an aggressive tire similar to the BFG KMT's. They are softer compound though I think. Mine are relatively quiet on road. I can hear them mainly between around 35 to 45 mph. Above or below this they are no louder in the cabin than the HP's were. The feel on road is a little less sports carish than the HP's were, but the tires are 3" taller and about 1" to 1.5" narrower, so go figure.

I love the tires, but agree they are pricey. I chose them over the BFG KMT's for a simple reason...... I have a Goodyear Credit account :)

However, I would buy them again without hesitation if price were not the only factor. I anticipate them to handle fine in snow/ice as well.

It's just my opinion, but I've always liked Michelin. In general, they ride quiet and smooth and grip better than the rest (for sports tires as well as SUV tires). I think they make the best tires with bridgestone coming second. I'm speaking in general terms, of course. As for the GY's, I don't remember the exact model, but we used different types of Wranglers. And our tires were always pretty new (govt spending at it's best).

The magazine I mentioned said the MT/Rs were bloody difficult to mount on the rim while the goodrich just slipped on. They concluded by that (and by the sitting test) that the GY must be hard. But the tread could be made softer ? Dont know.

Another "-": the MT/R speed rating is less than the goodrich (some of our highways have no speedlimit).

That's it, the GSAs! Even new, these tires, in my humble opinion, are the biggest pieces of crap that Goodyear has ever made and they do tend to cup easily. Not a mean spirited remark here at all, but c'mon guys, don't judge their tires on these crappy things!

More of a street tire, but I also like the ATS quite a bit (for what it is for) and right now I have the Workhorse on my Disco and have been pretty happy with it. Next tire change though, back to the MTR! And of course they are harder to mount with the sidewall they have.

Hendrik - I had these tires on a full size Blazer that I was afraid to take off road in much, but they di very well on the road for a tire that aggressive and they could cout right through snow too. I gotta believe they will do great on my Disco when I get them again. And yes, you will hear noise, but that is not much of a surprise when you look at them is it? ; )

And guys..........on the Blazer they were white letter out and they looked sweet. Let's hear it.............

no need to convince me about white letters. had a set of the GSA's on a J**p and tore a hole in 2 of them. should not have happened IMO. hated them......then again i hated the J**p too.
