I need a new flashlight to mount in my disco. I want to see what kind of flashlights other people have and the pros/cons. I want a good quality one, so no "the price is good on this one" please.

Just a simple reccomendation would be appreciated.

Matt,

I switched out my cargo door area maglite last weekend and replaced it with a rechargable 12V maglite. I drilled enough holes to run the wiring from the door area through the back wall and ran the wiring up the pillar where the rear seatbelt is located. Tucked the wires way back so they won't ever interfere with seatbelt operation. Drilled a hole for the 12V cord to come out in the little indented box area that holds the cargo cigar plug. This way I can keep it plugged in all the time and it recharges when I am on the road. I got tired of changing out batteries for fresh ones when I'd be gone for awhile. Cheapest source for that I could find for this was at www.galls.com, $94.99.

The large Maglites are awesome and readily available at Home Depot. I've had several of the small ones and I don't like them. They are too susceptable to inadvertantly twisting the cap and running the batteries dead when it is not supposed to be in use.

There are mounting clips for the big maglites for $3.99 at Home Depot. My Home Depot did not carry them. From recommendations on threads, I went to the next town and the Home Depot there did carry the clips.

If you want smaller and stronger "flashlights", check out SureFire at www.ExpeditionExchange.com. They put out incredible light, are compact, and are great for multi-purpose use.

Good Luck, Jamie

The SureFire's are pretty good. I think those are the ones that the State Police use. The Mags are definetly good too. They are reasonabley priced too. If you go for a Mag Lite be sure to get the 5-D cell. It is much brighter than the others.

If you want the best http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/co_disp/displ/pgrfnbr/16/sesent/00
or if you like LEDs

or if you want reviews of LEDs

mag-lites are good lights but past their prime in technology vs the surefire brand.

Get a rechargeable MagLite. It's much brighter than the battery version. Here's a pic of where I have it mounted:

Nobody can beat Surefire for personal lighting.

As for night time trails, forget that boat anchor flashlight.

This is suppose to be the best flashflight

I believe the cost is only around $2500. But it comes with its own case.

Craig - tell me about that pic! I was thinking about having some underside lights. Got to be submersible though.

Reed,
I heard carbide lamps work real WELL in methane filled enclosed places. :-)

I heard KA-BOOM!

Rupert-

Details! Details!!! You can't breath very well in those environments either.

My body is too fat to fit in those holes anymore, and my head has gotten too fat to really fit in the hat anymore. (Must be all the common sense I have aquired.)

It is still usefull at times, and a fun lamp to use while walking in the deep dark woods at night.

Haven't compared it to a Surefire yet. But it's probably cheaper to run.

It's gotta be Alzheimers for me, but I could swear I saw a new carbide lamp for sale at Sports Ltd in Redding last year.

Anyway, as for Matt's flashlight inquiry, I still like the Surefire brand and my 2nd choice would be the Mag-lite brand in the personal flashlight category.
Those multi-million candlepower lights, I feel would take too much space in an already crowded Disco. If you got the room, go for it.

Thanks for all the responses guys/gals. I think I'll go with one of the Surefire lights. Not right yet though. That and the Dweb videos are going to have to wait We just had to fix a major brake problem on our Ford, and one of our pooches had to have surgery (all in the same week).

Thanks,

Matt

Carbide lamps have always been some of my favorite toys. (Lucas even made them befor they didn't invent electricity.) Then there is the ultimate carbide toy, the Big Bang canon.

Back to flashlights. I carry a three cell mag light under the front seat (actually between the tunnel and the seat) on each side. I also have one of those funny little Pelican lights cliped to above the visor on the pasengers side. With the adjustable neck it makes a pretty good map light. when the pasenger is using it, there isn't too much glare on my side of the truck.

When I get a few more other projects taken care of, I'll probably get a Surefire, or whatever is state of the art when I get it. Shopping for one is a great excuse for going to gun shows. (Well more PC anyway.) Of course then I have to buy all the adapters to clip it to various handguns and shotguns.
