I've had this annoying vibrating rattle coming from somewhere around mid/rear vehicle when the vehicle is stationary and running. Anyway, after investigating it appears that the heat sheild between the forward exhaust box and the vehicle floor has come loose and is bouncing around under there. The noise is caused as the shield rests against the chassis. So, my question is, where should this shield be fixed? I couldn't see any mounting points, but I only had a quick look. Also, is this shield really necessary or can I just remove it? Any help appreciated, Jon |

Mounting points on our 95 disco are two at front of muffler, two at rear; reach above when truck is cool and the bolt heads are easy to find. Easy to replace. Old style shield was fiber board; ours broke and there was no way to reattach. New style is rigid composite, cost about $50. I seem to recall other posters saying their rear floor got really hot without the shield. I think ours is cooler with the new shield with an air gap between it and the muffler, compared with the old shield sitting on the muffler. Just last week had to tighten the bolts, and add some washers to get them to hold the shield tight, about a year after we installed it. It sure is nice to have the rattle gone! |

jec so are the bolts rigidly attached to the vehicle or could they have worked their way out? Like I said I only had a quick look, I'll investigate further tonlght. Thanks, Jon |

Jon: The top of the factory muffler has raised brackets front and rear, and each bracket has nuts welded to them. The bolts insert from the top, through the heat shield, into the nuts on the brackets. As I recall, mine were originally quite tight - may be lock nuts or a jam fit, or may have been rust. But like I said, when I cleaned them up, they worked loose after a year. If you have the old style shield, it's more likely that it has torn or disintegrated. This happened on a friend's 95 as well as on ours. A small cosmetic mirror will help you see the top side of the shield the next time you crawl under the truck. John |

Jon, It's funny you are asking about this tonight. I just came in a few minutes ago from fixing that exact same thing on mine. The bolts are not attached. They are just hanging down through the bracket. On mine the front nut worked it's way off and the shield was hanging down on the muffler. my bolt was still there. I did not bother trying to figure out what size it is, I just pushed a 1/4" speed-nut on it. (you know those little, flat, stamped-out-of-sheet-metal nut things that auto makers use when they are too cheap to put a real nut on something) Anyway it worked like a charm. It's kind of hard to get to, but the speed-nut works good because you can just push it on . If you've lost your bolt, just use any old nut and bolt. You know what's kind of pathetic is that I've been putting up with that rattle for weeks, and it took five minutes to fix. Greg |

Jon- I wouldn't recommend driving without the heatshield. I found out the hard way that the heat is enough to burn the undercoat and scorch the body paint and carpeting. |

Thanks everyone, I had a longer look earlier and from all you've said it should be straight forward enough. Thanks Greg, I know what you mean, I've also been putting up with it for weeks. Cheers. |
