I was told by my local LR service rep that the LR's don't need to be aligned. Is this true?

No.

True in so far that many adjustments necessary on passenger cars are not possible on LR´s.
Only exception is the track-rod - this HAS to be adjusted, but only after renewing the ball joints.

They do not have to be alligned unless something gets bent or replaced.

The don't need it like IFS cars and trucks to compensate for sagging springs small deformations etc.

My experience has been that only "toe-in" can be adjusted.

Just set it up at 1/8" toe out and you're all set - easy to do at home.
