havent picked up a manual for the truck yet
i need to put new gear oil in the tranny. Looks like the fill for the gear box is the little allen screw above the drain plug. Kind of hard to find , had the box pressure washed many times. South Jersey mud, nasty shit
oh its a 5spd

it's on the front of the tranny, and it's not an allen from what i remember, more like a 17 mm, or 14mm. it just a bolt that juts out, nothing special about it. be sure to check your transfer-case fluid...I checked mine when I first bought the truck and they had put ATF in it!!!!

Hey John,

Well, for starters, don't put gear oil in the transmission. Land Rover originally Called for ATF (Dextron II) for the LT77 and R380 (likely your gearbox. The reason for this is the manual transmissions have a pump in them that circulate the lubricant, and regular 80w90 gear oil will be to thick for the pump, and lead to its failure.

Having said this, Land Rover Issued a service bulletin in November of 1998 regarding a change in specification for the transmission lubricant. This affected all VIN #s from WA752315 (Disco) and WA131138 (Defender) onward. Anyhow, the specification changed from ATF to a Product marketed by Texaco, and by Caltex of Australia, called MTF94. This product is a true gear oil with a 75W80, GL-4 Rating. I do not know about the availability of this Product in the US, but Redline Synthetics manufactures a Product called MTL (manual Transmission Lubricant) that has virtually identical specifications, and is excellent. If I were you, I would pour Redline MTL into your gearbox, I do...

Hey John,

Forgot to mention one thing. The Lubrication spec did not change for the LT77 Box, just the R380, so if you have an LT77 stay with ATF.

Not to sound condescending, but if you are not sure which you have, simply look at the gear pattern. If reverse is all the way to the left and forward you have an LT77, if it is all the way to the right, and back, you have the R380. Sorry for that omission everyone...

Re: Amsoil Redline MTL

I've heard rumors of seal leaks developing after people started using MTL. Anybody have any comments or first hand experience with SUSTAINED use of MTL in LR boxes over long periods ?

Seal leaks? Where. All the seals in the case (not input or output though) were silicone on mine.

I got my R380 apart on my dining room table as we speak. I am fighting with "the nut."

On mine (non disco) the fill plug is above the drain plug by a couple inches. Mine was a square head.

Ron

ATF only goes in borg warner transfer cases, not disco, but found in 89 and up RR.

I have used MTL in both the gearbox and the transfer case. It has been in for 40,000 miles. Quietest Disco around! I am very happy with the MTL.
Hope that helps,
neil

Thanks Neil.

Firsthand info is great and sometimes lacking on this board. You know, "I had a freind that heard from his uncle that someones brother..."

Ron, SEVERAL non-LR BB's have a lot to say about seal leaks when using MTL - most often in German trannies. That's why I mentioned it...

Cool,

I was wondering what the issue might be. When I took it apart all the seals looked to be right stuff.

Sounds like I am going with MTL too. Any difference between redline and amsoil versions?
