1. Last week sometime, my shifter became very difficult to shift gears. At one point, the little plastic piece that indicates what gear you are in broke off and the plastic lining the center stopped moving and is now ripped from changing gears. Can this be fixed/replaced? If so, how difficult is this? 2. I am noticing some loud "barking" in the body somewhere every time I go over a bump. Maybe something needs lubed? 3. I put new tires (stock size) and had the wheels balanced and aligned. But the Disco still wanders. Was I supposed to check something else when changing tires? TIA! Did you spill a sticky beverage on your center console and not get it cleaned up well (I did)? I was told by rover that the gear shift indicator is sold as one piece. I picked up a used one off ebay for $65. Keep your eye out for them, the guy I got mine from has listed several in the last souple of months all go in the $60 range. Try Kurt at www.rovercannibal.com for a used one as well. For new I'd go with www.roverconnection.com (I think when I checked they were around $100, the dealer was asking $160) or Nathan Crabtree at www.discountrovers.com I replaced the unit myself in December, only a couple of hours (had to run to the store to get new bulbs for unit). I think there are 4-6 screws that you have to remove to get the console apart (2 inside the cubby box). Remove the knob and boot on your diff/hi-low stick (twist off). I had a problem getting the console (also heard it called doghouse) over the p brake lever (pull up real hard, otherwise you might have to take the lever apart). There are 4 screws that hold the indicator unit in place. Unless you are buying new, put new bulbs in before you reinstall. Everything goes back together in reverse order. Email me if you need help. |

Mine did the same thing. I just cut out the plastic and replaced it with leather. The The bad part is that I cant see what gear I'm in at night, so sometimes I have to turn the light on to see. Pisses me off, but I live with it. Better than paying the dealer $200 to replace it. If you can get one used, I'd do it. Like the previous post said, you have to buy the entire piece. |

A thought on the "barking" ... bushings or shocks. Are they original? As for the wandering I would go to a good alignment shop next. Did the people that replaced the tires mention unusual wear patterns? When you have the alignment checked have them also check the tie rod ends and check for play in the wheel bearings. Just some guesses. Have some Fun! Tad |
