I need to carry home a 20 foot x 6" x 1/4" 'plank' of mild steel. Now, the roof rack is about 7 feet long, so I don't want another 7 feet of bar overhanging each end as I'm thinking it will bend (not sure on this one).

I have the brush bar, and was thinking of making a simple temporary rack extension that bolts onto the spot-light mounts and sticks upward to the height of the rack, and then have the front end of the 'plank' rest over that somewhat so it doesn't bend / move around much. I'm too cheap to pay the 50 bucks to have it chopped in half, for the 2 seconds it takes the supplier to do this.

If anyone has any experience with this or any good ideas, I'd appreciate your comments (which I need by tomorrow:))

Its actually less than 200 lb, and only 6" wide so I'm not worried about sailing. And if I'm too cheap to cut it in half, do you think I'm gonna rent a flat bed?:)

Dean - won't the steel supplier cut it for free (1 or 2 cuts) - most do (at least around me)?

I am amazed that the supplier would rape you for $50 on a single cut!!! My supplier does flame cuts for free, and plasma for about $5/cut.

will it bow enough (without deforming) to let it be secured directly to the top brush bar and then curve on up to the roof rack and hang off the back? I transported a shitload of 20' PVC irrigation line by tying it tight to the top of the brush bar with front shackels, ran it up over the roof and let it hang off the back but secured it with a line throught the rear shackle so it wouldn't bounce.

Thanks everyone for the advice - dom I wish I had seen your email on time. Anyway, I built a frame that bolts onto the brush bar (you know, when kids get their hands on a new toy, the welder in this case) last night that lines up with the top of the roof rack, so I think Ill be alight.

The pricing is this:
12 feet $130 - cut
20 feet $78 - single piece.
I might try to find a new supplier - does anyone know one in central NJ?

if you plan ahead and tell them you can have it dropped off anytime

most companys that have a route will deliver steel around me.

it seams they prefer not to have you in there yard if they can avoid it.

we buy 2" 120 wall 4 or 5 tubes at a crack and they deliver free.

the best prices always come un-cut

set up for even 1 cut can cost you because they really dont want you there "helping" so they price it high to discourage that kinda bussiness.

Where are you picking this up?
If you find a place that can cut it in half, we can get it into my pick-up. No Charge.

Larry - thanks for the offer. I managed to get the bar home ok - quite a laugh getting it down off the roof at my house afterwards - I wish I had that on film LOL.

Anyway, here's a few photos. When I finish making the sliders, I'll add an entry to the tech section. I'll make a template to for the future, so it won't take too long to make another set if anyone is interested.
