HI gang, I am still troubleshooting the problem where I lose power up a hill on my 96' Disco. I am thinking that it is a fuel related problem. The thing next to the charcoal canister with the wires going to it, i think it is a purge valve, was making a lot of noise yesterday while the truck was parked. It was clicking and vibrating. Is this normal when the car is idling? I unplugged it and so far the truck has not lost power. Can someone explain to me how this thing works and if it is bad why it would make me lose power going up a hill?

Anyone out there know anything about how it works?

Just an update, The truck is still running good after unpluging this valve. No problems going up the hill that typically gives me trouble

Sorry I dont know anything about the canister, but mine was making a clicking noise also. It only did it one day and I did not notice any performance drop. It hasnt done it since and I dont know why.

I remember that the charcoal canister collects the fumes that would otherwise escape via the fuel-tank ventilation while parking.
If the engine is running then air is drawn through the canister into the air intake system (there is a hose connected to the canister and the plenum chamber) and the petrol fumes find themselves in the engine rather than the environment. This action is controlled by the purge valve which opens intermittedly (this is controlled by the ECU).
So there is some relationship to the engine´s aspiration and therefore possibly to its power.

I am tinkering with removin the canister (the place could be of better use) and have the tank-ventilation been done by a special valve (allows a light pressure before letting escape the fumes, thus reducing evaporation). But I am always slow in making plans real ..
