I have a 1999 Discovery 1. When I shift into reverse or drive, I get a loud clank/clunk from the transmition. This only happens once it has warmed up. LR claims this is normal but I'm not convinced. Anyone experience this? If I doesn't sound good it probably isn't. Am I right?

I have the same thing on my 1997 Disco 1. Everything checks out fine. Make sure the hand brake is engaged when shifting from P to R and back to lessen the noise.

Get use to it, way worse on my 5 speed. I have had plenty LR's and they all have it.

Nothing will happen, but to a new LR owner it sounds horrific. I must say it is better on newer models but if you want a scare, try a 80's Range Rover 4 speed.

A little clunk is normal. A lot of clunk is the transfer case input shaft going bad. I also noticed lots of clunk on the overrun as this developed. So, I would say that is a warning sign. I have replaced this on both the '87 RR and the '97 Disco. At least the Disco was under warranty :). Seems like someone told me this shaft is a mechanical fuse for the drive train. Has anybody else heard that? I had to insist they look at the Disco and sure enough the shaft was bad. Once you've heard this sound you know it.

By dealer standards it is a cheap job.

Jeff...friends from England have told me that my clunk when going rev.to drive and back is definitely t-case input shaft, apparently part of the Land Rover owner's experience in the UK, everyone's Disco over there gets this repair done s a matter of course...How hard/easy was the replacement in your Disco...I want to do it soon, just wondering if you had to drop the case, etc. Thanks in advance,Adam
