Norm,

I am intrigued by the pinging/fluttering noise that you experience with your 4.6 at high rpm's. I have just acquired a used DII, with just over 55,000km's and when it gets past 2000rpm it has a low sounding constant knocking/fluttering (smooth as silk sounding below 2000 rpm's). I have used Valvoline Syntech Fuel Treatment and other various injector cleaners to try and correct the problem but to no avail. I took it into the dealer, and they informed me that it was resonance from the pistons, and that this is normal. You attribute yours to carbon build up. Any further clarification/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

What kind of oil are you using?

I'm no expert, but I attribute the fluttering with Amsoil to oil blowing by the piston rings (possibly fouling the plugs) and/or the hydraulic lifters not getting enough "lift" from Amsoil at high rpm. I could be wrong about this, but with Valvoline racing oil (non synthetic) I don't have this problem, nor am I losing oil like I was with Amsoil.

This is a 5-speed, so I have a tendancy to wind it out to higher rpm between shifts, which may not be possible with an auto trans.

Norm,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I am currently using a Castrol synthetic blend 10w-30 and/or 5w-30.

Cheers,

Arman.

You might give Valvoline VR1 20W50 racing oil a try. It only costs about $2 per quart and was recommended by the company that built my motor (RPi).

Norm,

Is this oil, and the weight suitable for all driving conditions. The ambiemt climate where I live is between -15 degrees centigrade and 25 degrees centigrade.

Again, thank you for the information.

Arman.

What's that in American temperature? Where you at, boy?

I believe Valvoline makes VR1 in 10W30, as well as various single viscosities, but don't know what's available in your country. According to RPi in the UK, they recommend the 20W50, so they must have it there.
