OK Guys and Gals I need some help. I have a '98 DI auto with about 110K. The problem is, at anything over 50mph if I hit a bump I get very bad shaking in the front end. If I slow to below 50 it goes away. I can cruise all day at any speed w/o hitting a bump and it drives great. BTW no lift or anything. Thanks in advance. SteveH (sorry not registered yet |

after inspecting the bushings and all ball joints in the steering links, take a look at this link. it's a great article on swivel ball housing service by dave gomes. http://www.d-90.com/~daveg/Swivels/report.html the shake could be caused by the housing preload as well as bad steering link ball joints or worn bushings. |

check that all steering component bolts and suspension bolts are tight; check steering/suspension bushings for wear; replace steering dampner shock (also called steering stabilizer). Do it sooner than later - this is a dangerous situation for you and others on the road around you. I know EE sells Old Man Emu (OME) stabilizer which is a good upgrade.

also could be the panhard rod bushing on the top end on the drivers side. Fluid sripping from the power steering lines can make this bushing disintegrate my 94 d1 did this same shimmy wobble when it hit a bump. my bushing was toast |

At 110k on the clock it most likely is a combination of some or all described above. And is time for some major suspension work Things to consider The Tire balance and condition is a major vibration cause maybe a bent rim? All the High milers I have needed a total rebush kit; the frame bushes when worn will bounce you all around and if pan hard bushes are getting loose this will affect you also in cornering. Have someone rock the Disco while youre looking at the frame bushes. Look at the leading and trailing arm bushes if in good shape no visible movement at the frame should be observed Shocks and springs will greatly improve the ride, the stock Woodheads are at best POS The Swivel house that depends how hard you have been on the Disco and corrosion it the face is corroded the bearing also should be suspect, Also look at the condition of the steering shaft ujoints. Also keep in mind when you change one item it might mask the real problem for a while.. Good luck If you need any parts email Dee Cantrell [email protected] Discount Rovers.com |

the panhard rod acts as the side to side control arm on your front axle. the top mount is dirrectly below your sterring box. it is a straight rod with no joints in it. it travels over to the other side on a slight downward angle. where it attaches to the axle housing. the easiest way to find it is. while someone else turns the sterring back and fourth it will be the rod that does not move back and fourth with the wheels. it keeps the axle from moving side to side under the truck |

I would check your tires first. I had the exact violent wobble you discribe, only it hit me at 55-60mph. The stock michilen tires had worn unevenly and were very out of balance. I got new tires and life was smooth rolling once again. So, my recomendation is to drop into a tire shop and get the tire balance checked. If that doesn't help, start with a list of all the previously listed items. Dave |

I aggree the tire check should be the first step, But with over 100K your looking at more than just tires to regain a decent ride. |
