Idealy if you are stuck with that ARB you should try to find a M12 Warn..... Kyle |

Kyle Just out of curiosity, Why is it that there is some dislike for the arb bars in the usa, as here in australia they carry a fairly good reputation? Thanks Daren |

Daren , dont get me wrong. I dig the ARB , its designed for an intended use and it performs its job perfectly. However , its not very versatile and it gets hung up on every damn thing like a terrain magnet. I suppose that you could say that at some point , all bumpers are gonna touch mother Earth and you are absolutely right. I just think the ARB does it a little faster then it should... Kyle |

Thats cool Kyle I was just curious. I supose You guys do more rock crawling type stuff than we do down here, we are more inclined to do days and weeks out in the bush. Thanks for your objective and honest reply Daren |

I agree, the biggest Warn you can afford and fit in there. Daren, definitely the ARB recieves a lot of criticism in the US, but plenty of people still run them here. They are really designed for outback travel where protecting the front end from roos or a stray calf is critical. Here in the US, offroading is more a sport than a necessity compared to Aus where one goes off road just trying to get from point A to point B. Being from Perth, I'll defend most things from Aus including the ARB, but it has some problems for use on tighter trails. Look at this pic and compare those approach angles.
I've been working on my ARB so the approach angle is a little improved. http://www.discoweb.org/evanscreek/IMG_0863.jpg |

Daren, Any winch greather than an 8,000lb will suffice. Some prefer 10,000lb and up. If you use a snatch block with your winch, you'll discover that an 8,000lb is sufficient. BW |

I have not installed my winch yet but but here is something that I read that influenced my decision. http://www.bb4wa.com/articles/Accessories-winch.htm "Take the rig to a truck scale and for about $5.00, weigh it. Have the dog, your buddies, the cooler, the kids, all the junk--er equipment--you carry (tent, bags, starter, axle shafts, air filter, extra oil, tools...you get my drift) and a full tank of gas. Multiply that weight by 1.5 and you have the minimum rating for the winch, usually around 8000 or 9000 pounds for most Jeeps and Land Rovers. For the big rigs like full-size Broncos and Blazers and trucks, think 10,000 or 12,000 pound winch. Of course, with the correct accessories like pulley blocks (not SNATCH blocks) you can double the capacity of any winch" |

If you have an ego as heavy and a mouth as big as Kyle's you need a 12000 winch to pull it up the hill. The rest of us can use a 9000 pound winch just fine. |

yeah, let's face it, how often do we use that winch anyways? an 8000 lb winch will be just fine. that's actually overkill for driveway use. |

Buy a roller fairlead for a hundred bucks or so then go to Home Depot; buy three feet of cable and the bigest, coolest looking hook you can find. Mount the fairlead to the ARB, attach the hook to one end of the cable then stick the other end through the fairlead and duct tape it somewhere on the other side. Now you can look all hardcore while you drive to the mall to buy lots of nice things with all the money you saved (if you want to be really cool park on a curb when you get there). |

"let's face it, how often do we use that winch anyways?" Winch is more poser factor than anything else. In the end it becomes a useless heavy weight in the front serving little purpose. Anyway, I have friends that tell me a 6000lb winch is enough for the Disco |

Hi Daren there are way to many winch opinions here but I will add my 2 cents. I have an X9 in my ARB at the moment and it is a great winch, but.. it needs to be used very frequently to stay lubricated and easy to free spool. The WARN M12K seems a bit more forgiving in usage versus easy of free spooling and it fits in the ARB non air bag. I now am all for fitting the largest winch you can in the space allowed, lower battery drain and more pulling power with less line payed out. In most cases with the X9 I find that you need to use a snatch block ( it's the same as a pulley block just make sure it is rated for the purpose)and then extension lines are required. Kyle is a great fan of worm gear winches and there are none that will fit the ARB ( here is my two cents again JP 00DII that comment was immature) but they are far superior to a planetary winch when matched up side by side. My thoughts based on experience, go for the M12K if you have the ARB. Mike |

Perhaps JP stands for j**p?! LOL Funny thing about larger winches - they don't work as hard as a smaller winch - surprise, surprise Was out a few weeks ago and a series of trucks had to winch up a fairly long (60 ft approx) and steep (slippery) hill. All the 9K winches had to stop and "rest" halfway up and I went right up with the Warn M12 with everyone yelling that I was burning out my winch motor - got to the top and put my hand on it and it was barely warm....the 9K's were extremely hot even after stopping on the pull. Don't know about anyone else, but dangling by a winch line while waiting for the stupid winch to cool down doesn't sound like much fun - hell, it wasn't even fun while in-motion nuff said. Bill |

bill, those guys will still argue that you could have doubled the line with a snatch block and thje 9K winch would have been just fine. wait, 60ft? never mind. not enough cable. LOL |

Bill , no matter how many times you say it , it just doesnt get through. I mean damn , you couldnt have said it any better right there , BUT , do you think that will end this debate ? I dont think so.... It cant really be a cash issue cause as you were winching up not having to stop how much was that 12k winch worth to you ? Now some are gonna chime in about pulley blocks and resting the winch , yadda yadda , yadda yadda , we have heard it all be fore and it is ofcourse accurate. But is it a real word scenario ? Sure if all you have is the little smoker you do what ya gotta do to get by with it. BUT , thats not what we are talking here , we are talking about a purchase of gear. The guy has the option of avoiding all the bullshit and getting something that will get the job done without breaking a sweat... I dont really care for the warns at all but that M12 is certainly gonna have to work less to get the same job done. and its your best option for an ARB. So JP , BLOW ME... hows that ? Kyle |

I alway like to think back to the Pittsburgh trip when we had to tandom 3 trucks together to get the trucks over the big rock and then the smaller set. 0 traction, and 1 winch pulling all 3 up the hill. Situations like that help sell me on the need for "the most pull you can afford". Now that I have 1 broken winch, I think My 9K will go to the D90 and the Disco will get a big boy up front. Of course thats all subject to the bosses approval of funding. LOL Chris von C |

Last week, I saw two Ramseys stall trying to pull a Disco out of a mud hole. One was supposedly rated at 11K but didn't look very big to me. The other was purported to be a 15K (looked it), was 15 years old and had some difficulty getting going. It took three Discos chained together (yeah, sounds real safe to me too-good thing I'd already left when they decided to do this) to get the guy's truck out and by that time, he had taken on a considerable amount of water. As it turned out, even using my pulleys, neither winch was able to pull the truck out. One of the guys who had the sense to stay out of the mud (last Sunday) related a story the week before where he had gotten stuck and he stalled the 20K winch on the tow truck! When using pulleys, keep in mind that the included angle of the cable can drastically impact the real-world mechanical advantage. I know of two 'Mogs with Ramsey tow truck hydraulic winches (if for no other reason, I do love the 'mog PTO accessiblity)-even they stall sometimes. In the event I ever buy a winch, it will likely only be a 9K, but I avoid the situations where I think I can't get out. |

Hmm , well , something dont smell right there . A 12K winch could more then likely winch three trucks backwards that were pulling against it on flat dirt. I would say that more then likely it was just poor equipment. Also , having a big winch is great but it should keep you from looking under the truck to see what its hung on. You might be winching the transfer case out from under it.. Kyle |

Thanx Kyle. One front wheel was a foot in the air with the other two feet in the mud. I'm sure had you been there you would have been able to pull it out with your bare hands. |

Paul , my point is that many times people just dont know how to rig for a pull. You can have a truck stuck and a guy with a 20 ton winch attempting to pull it out at a slightly wrong angle . All that will get you is a stalled winch. Some guy can roll up to the same stuck truck with a 6K winch and drag him on out... There is alot more to it then a strong winch and cable.... Its a game of angles... Kyle |

I got my Disco stuck in a 4.5 foot high snow drift surrounded by mud yesterday. A Jeep with a Warn 9000 came up and tried to use his winch only to smoke the thing like crazy. My rig didn't move one inch. I would smoke too if I was on a Jeep but I'm definitely going with the 12000. My girlfriends Land Cruiser pulled me out in 45 seconds this morning. |

I will say it again. Real winches have driveshafts. eventually you will flame any electric if you try hard enough. Also ratings are very subjective. REP8000 and my Koenig are both rated the same, what do you think will pull more? The flamer or something that weighes close to 200lbs and is driven by the engine? Ron |
