I just added the blue 8mm Magnecor wires to my 1996 Disco and I have a couple of questions: Should the Magnecor wires match the factory wires exactly in length? I pulled one wire at a time and matched them for length. The last wire I installed was longer than the factory wire. Does this matter? Does it matter if I reinstall the wire looms that hold the wires in the back?(not the ones attached to the engine) Just curious if any of this could set off my Check Engine Light?? Thanks in Advance |

for one make sure the plug wire boots are snug on the spark plug. sometimes it is hard to get it all the way on there. this could throw a light if they are not properly attached. i am pretty sure mine matched. did like you did......took one off and replaced it. how much longer? your 8mm's may not fit into those old looms. you can get new ones if you really want. they are there just to keep it tidy and so they are not lying on really hot surfaces, etc. |

gp(Garrett)- It was a PITA to get the boots snug but I am pretty sure they are on good. WHat can you use if anything to grease the boot so it goes on easier?? The longer wire is about 5 inches longer. Is that bad?? So it doesn't hurt for the wires to touch one another?? Thought I read somewhere on here that someone else had trouble b/c their wires were all over each other. |

You can use a bit of di-electric grease in the spark-plug grooves... DON'T go wild with it, "just a dab'll do ya"... 5"??? You might have mis-placed one of the wires, mine were all very close to the original lengths. Check the longer ones, see if one may be off. (Did you make sure that you have a set for the right engine, ie, a 3.9 or a 4.0? Different sets, you know...) It's not wanted for them to touch, but, it's not like the Rover's gonna blow up because of it. Most of mine were persuaded to fit into the original looms w/o damage, but, it wasn't fun. -L |

I ordered the set for the 4.0 so I am assuming that is what they sent. How can you tell? It was just a set of blue wires in a box. All of the wires matched except the last one as I did them one at a time. |

yeah they can be a bitch to get on good. use some dielectric grease if you need to. having a longer wire should not cause any harm. you can always cut and shorten it yourself if it bothers you or is really in the way. i went with the 7 or 7.5 mm wires and they fit in the looms fine and were all the right lengths. but they were snug in the looms. i would head to a parts store and get some new looms just to keep things tidy. |

What about Bosch copper core plugs?? I added these at the same time and the guy at Pep Boys told me they were gapped correctly. What is the proper gap for these plugs? |

Somewhere between .036 and .04, off the top of my head, double-check to be sure. They're probably fine, tho'.... The pliers are nice when pulling the boots off plugs when you're not wanting to replace the wires (speaking from experience! lol....). The big advantage of the di-electric grease isn't for making it easier to get the boots on, though, it's to help in keeping water out once you start splashing through larger puddles. With the magnecors, you have to pinch the boot a good bit to help get the air out of there... those are nice snug boots, that can trap air and make it difficult to get the boots on all the way. That's where the pliers would help out. -L |

I just installed the red wires yesterday. THe secret to getting the wires into place is rolling them into the looms. Match the lenghts and drive around if there is a loss in power either one of your connections is loose or you have the wires mixed up. |

The instructions that came with my 8mm for my 88 RR even stated that they matched lengths where it made sense, but if the factory was not using the optimal length, they changed it. Problem is, they did not say which one was changed. I laid all the old and new wires out on the ground from longest to shortest and matched them that way. As for wires crossing, in both my manual and workshop, it cautions crossing two pairs in particular (having the wires actually cross), I believe it was 5/7 and 2/8. Something like that. It says that you could actually jump a spark--FWIW. |
