My friend got his truck stuck in a deep swamp water. He has a snorkle and winch but that doesn't matter cuz he stalled and flooded his truck (97 disco). Me being the idiot decided to go in there, Ive been in before and it usual is ok but my 95 disco stalled in a deep water rut and my car flooded the cabin. A tow truck pulled it out and iwas able to drive the car home after a bunch of water shot out the pipe. Anyways, the car worked the next day minus some warning lights and the door locks. THe speakers and gps systems were gone tho. So the next day the car just stops working i pull some fuses fix it and later on same thing but this time it doesnt start. NOw the battery is basically dead and not to much is working in the car and it wont turn over. My friend's car was deamed totaled at the dealership cuz his was a lot worse than mine, wouldnt even start or anything and he had to let it sit in the water over night. Mine went intoday and they deamed mine totaled too??? They say it would cost to much to fix cuz the labor charges and shit. I want to no since my car was working right after the incident why they could say they need to replace so many parts. THe engine was fine and the warning lights were going off after a minute, i didn't slipp the transmission at all when i drove it. The only thing was electrically some things didn't work, and now they want to replace everything. Does this make sense. Has anyone else drowned their rovers and fixed them? Thank you |

Take it to a couple of more places to get other opinions. The dealership would just rather sell you a new car, not repair your old one. After all, they are in business to make money. If it were me, I'd pull it home and change ALL of the fluids and filters. I'd be sure to blow out all of the breather hoses (2 axles, transfer case, transmission) otherwise I'd be putting water/crud right back into the system. Next, I'd pull the battery from the vehicle and recharge it. I agree with Perrone, your alternator might be fried. I'd spray all connections in the engine compartment and in both fuse boxes with WD40 (engine compartment and in the cabin). Also, I'd pull off the distributor cap and check it thoroughly. Then I'd put the battery back in the vehicle and see what happens. If it starts, I'd get a volt meter and check the voltage at the engine compartment fuse box. If it's less than 13.4 volts, the alternator is not working. Also, check the grounds carefully. Pull out the entire interior (2-3 hours work) including the door panels. Dry everything that you can manually. Close up your garage and turn on the dehumidifier. Let it pull as much moisture as it can. The longer you wait to get started drying and fixing the vehicle, the worse it will be to fix. Where are you located? Best of luck, Mike B. mike(at)discocrazy.org |

Charge up the battery and see if any error codes appear...I fear the ECU (under passenger seat) may be fried....take one step at a time. BTW if the battery is not sealed its may be contaminated and I'd tell you to ditch it Ans get the carpets and interior treated with biocide and shampooed by a detailing place otherwise mold will start to grow everywhere... Jungle smell Yummee! |

My Explorer got caught in the floods here in Houston last June and the water went into the dash. Sat on the street for 5 days while the insurance company was dealing with all of their flooded clients. Finally had it towed myself, because my mechanic said he needed to see it ASAP. The water just missed the computer and he said he could fix it, so the insurance company said ok. Folks had told me that you're not supposed to start a vehicle after it's been flooded (I kept trying when it stalled and tried again when the water went down), because it can crack the block. I think that's what they said would happen. Does this apply to any vehicle? |

Other things to check depending on how deep you were are: starter including solenoid, stepper motor, ECU. I'd dump all oils including engine , transmissions, diffs put in some cheap oil and dummp again in a week or so of use. If you have got silt (muddy water) inside mechanical bits won't last to long. (this is from experience) John D PS get a diesel it wouldn't have stopped. |

Actually, the water gets sucked in through the air intake into the piston cylinders. And since water does not compress, major damage ensues (bent rods, etc.). If think that you might have ingested water, do not attempt to start the vehicle. You will ruin the vehicle's engine. Also, on a Rover, if you kept your RPMs low, there is a good chance ingesting water will not ruin the engine. I've personally gotten 5 rovers going with this procedure (taught to me be a highly qualified LR mechanic). In the field, the thing to do if you think that you got water inside the engine is to remove all of the spark plugs and the air cleaner. Then turn over the engine (with the plugs out) to blow out all of the water. Be sure to note which cylinders DID NOT have water in them. Spray some oil or WD40 (in a pinch) into all cylinders with water. Put the plugs back in the dry cylinders and fire up the engine (you will need at least 3 dry cylinders for it to start). The cylinders with water in them will dry up in about 2 minutes. Be sure to stand back as this will make one hell of a mess. Turn off the engine and refit the rest of the plugs. Next, examine the oil for water. If it is murky, change it immediately. Also change the filter. This should get your vehicle running good enough to get you back home. Again, all of the usual disclaimers apply. Use this at your own risk. Your mileage may vary. Etc. Thanks, Mike B. |

Hey thanks for the advice. My car is at LR Hanover, MA. I will speak to the service guys again and see what they say. I might wanna just bring it home and do all the things you recomended, but I'm not sure yet. I checked a lot of stuff before I towed it over there. The ECU diagnostic box under the seat was flooded, but still showed some life but no errors. When i jumped the car to put up the windows it made a loud fog horn noise. I think the engine is fine, maybe i need a new battery tho. I need to drain all the fluids etc.. tho if i get the car back. The insurance guys are ganna look at it to. My friend said u need to keep the rpms high when u go thru water, but i kept mine kinda lowish, so i dont think there was a later water intake and the k&n air filter was fine. Thanks. |

Hey, I just spoke to LR again. They said the problem is all electrical and the engine is fine. He said the main wiring harness is probably gone and it would be something like 30 hours of work and that the car would have terminal problems forever, and there would be corosion etc.. What do you guys think? Could i maybe do that myself or should i give up? Thanks |

A new harnees in a series truck is a big job. I couldn't imagine it in one of these newer jobs. If I were you, I'd take the insurance money and run. |

Your insurance covers driving it into a river and killing it ?? Then take the money and say thank you and start over. Wait - did I just agree with Perrone ?!? This must be the Bizarro Discoweb site. ;) |

How much do you want for what's left of it? Sounds like a great place to start to make a trail rig... See what the insurance company wants for salvage value before Rover Cannibal gets it. FWIW, I rewired a '71 Nova while I was still in high school (Yes, I know, it had no electronics). It took awhile to get the horn to blow when you pushed on the horn ring, rather than when you turned the windshield wipers on, but it wasn't that big of a job and man, did I learn how the wiring on that car went together. While it is a big job, if your insurance company gives you a good enough deal, it might well be worth it to you. As you have a '95, the NADA value of that truck is probably somewhere in the $8K range, depending upon mileage and location. Most insurance companies will set the salvage value at about 10% of the NADA value, hence, you might be able to get a pile of money and only have to pay ~$1,000 to keep your truck, if you are so inclined. If you're not, I am. Although, I hadn't planned on driving to Massachusetts to get another Disco to rebuild. BTW-your insurance company might not reimburse you for any aftermarket stuff, unless you can provide receipts for every piece. Good luck and don't give up-yet, Paul |

Just a question: Would a snorkel have helped? Given the fact that it wasn't a diesel. |

It would have delayed the inevitable if he was truly stuck... but a snorkle does nothing for your poor wet ECU or other electrical components. They really are designed for dusty conditions on gas engines, not wet ones. |

As everyone has already said, drain your fluids asap. Pay special attention to your transmission fluid. If you get water in your transmision, it will appear to run fine for about 500 miles or so, but the water inside will boil and steam clean the inside of your transmission, dissolving the clutches in the process. You are then looking at an expensive tranny rebuild. |

hahah, nah it wasn't anything like those 2 discos. THe water came up around the front lights and it was only sitting there for like 10 minutes. I don't have any pics, but i have a nice hi 8 video of us doin the trail a work before in the dark, it is awesome. It's too bad that my friend decided to go in the oppisite side cuz the approaches are harder. |

This "Jay's" brother. I'd just like to say that while you and Matt are morons and the water was a lot higher than the headlights, you have provided entertainment for me and the whole family. For that, I thank you. |
