I am going to change the a/t trans fluid, will the pan come out without taking out the big cross member? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

No,

You have to take off the X memeber.

LR now only recommends the trans filter change at 30k and thats it, you don't (In theory) have to do it at 60, 90 etc.

Yeh, a filter change at 30,60,90 is cheeper than the 3k for a replacement ZF, What motivated that change from LR?

A) lazy, didn't want to have to pull off the crossmember.

B) those later service intervals are out-of-warranty... they get to sell you a new tranny, instead of a filter and fluid.

Maybe a bit harsh, but.... some dealers deserve such (and some don't)...

Cliff,
You don't have to remove the X-member (97 Disco), however you will need to move it foward towards the front of the truck quite a bit. It is a major hassle to remove pan with X-member pushed forward, but I have done it.
When I do it again, I will remove the X-member.
How to spread the frame? I have seen some posts on ideas. Use a highlift jack, a '2' person job. Another idea is to use some lumber, 2x4/4x4, cut 1/4 inch longer than frame span and wedge the frame apart. More hints to save time. However you spread the frame, make sure you spread it far enough so you can easily get it(XM) back in place, else you will spend too much time and effort aligning the bolts during reassembly. Also make sure you have cleaned the underbelly, else you will be constantly showered by dirt as you bang the XM out-of and into place. Hit the XM-bolts with PC-Blaster night before.
Hope this helps...

Long 2x4 and a 3lbs sledge

Works for me.

Ron

PS there is some reasoning behind it. Hopefully the tranny will not be sending out shavings past 30k so it should really not NEED to be changed and given the costs involved in a change and the fact that even a neglected zf will probably far outlast your engine, difs, and possibley body . . . up to you, like I said.

PPS You don't see many zfs being sold at dealers or anywhere else
