Hey..
Ive got a question. Does the Haynes Manual cover all of the basic repairs for the Disco? I just got my Rover, and want to replace the fuel filter.

The Rover dealer said that i was only getting 30psi from the system, and wanted me to replace the pump. I want to change the fuel filter first to see if that could be a problem...since the PO hadnt changed anything in 40,000 miles (plugs, cleaner, etc.) which I am planning on doing...and was hoping that the Haynes manual provided enough information to do the job right.

Any help for a newbie would be appreciated!!

The Haynes does go over the basics fairly well. At least the one for my RR does. I wouldn't use it for much else.

I have the Haynes manual for discos. For maintence it works fine. It will tell you how to change the fuel filter. For most people the Haynes manual should do fine, just don't expect to be able to do major electrical service or rebuild you CDL or things like that. I use the haynes for maintenence and the factory service manual for everything else.

am I right that Haynes doesn't have a manual that covers the 4.0?

For around $30 the Haynes manual isn't bad at all. It covers most standard service topics with how-to photo's. I also have the genuine service manual for the big jobs, but it cost somewhere near $80. For doing things like fluid changes and the basic stuff, you can't go wrong with the Haynes book for a D1. The Haynes book has a hard cover, it's lighter and smaller then the shop manual, so it's easy to keep in the car for those unexpected emergencies.
The Haynes book does not cover the DII.
I think 4x4Connection sells both books for a good price. check them out- their link is in the resources section on this web site.

A good source and it is as good as the Haynes, go on line to Alldata.com 14.95 per car per year. I belive the fist car is 20.00 it is a good source for the DIY. They do not have alot of the older models but i belive 95 and up D1 are listed. The
other bonus it is full of the TSB and it will give you the part numbers of items you may have to change

I found the Haynes lacking compared to other DYI manuals of other brands, it is useless if you have to rebuild anything major and gives very basic instructions( Not detailed enough). OK for general Lube advise. But to date I can't find any other manual for my 96 Disco here in Australia. So it I was stuck 1000kms from home I hope a LR mechanic was passing on the same trail.
May be some LR tech listening could start a tutorial section here on Discoweb with pics, no that would be something wouldn't it!

While the Haynes manual says it covers the 97MY, it does not cover the 4.0 engine. IMHO, for the most part, this is not a problem if you use it for simple maintenence.
