don't see any mention anywhere in the ad (yea or nay) regarding "US legal" but still, how the hell did he get it off the boat?

There are only a few ways to get these into the states-as we all know. I think the issue is keeping one here for more than three years-and staying here with a non-US passport.

There was one available several months ago, claiming to be the only "Legal" one in the country and that many thousands had been spent getting it legal. The price was $167,500!

There is one in mid-Michigan that returns to the UK every three years to reset the three year clock, but I don't know what sort of citizenship the owner has.

Well, one thing I've noticed is that the picture wasn't taken in the US. Look closely at the license plates on the cars and truck in the background (especially the Ford Focus through the passenger window). The plates are European-style.

Hmmm...

Maybe the picture was taken at the DOT or customs impound lot:-)

Go to the UK and buy one.

Got to a garage, pull the drivetrain out, and box up the body panels. Ship it all home as "parts".

Fly home. Open your packages. Reassemble. Register it as a self-built car.

Leslie,
I know people who have done this. You could technically do this. I'm sure you could have problems with Insurance and the such if you got in an accident. I would love to do it? Just don't have the balls!

Lisa,

The Defender on Paretti.com is a 1994. They stopped importing them in 1997. I am not sure the specfics of why but I think it had something to do with safety requirements in the US.

I am from Metairie. I grew up right by Paretti on Cleary Avenue. I now live in Atlanta. The LR dealership in Metairie is fairly new as I am sure you know. When I go back home to visit my parents I see more Land Rovers in the New Orleans area than the last time.

Robb,
Sorry about the goof. I am a newbie and am not up on all my facts about the imports. Will research more before opening mouth next time. Thanks for the info.

That pic was taken in the UK or europe.

I am guessing it is a scam of some sorts.

A lot make it over. Legally I can think of one that made it based on a clerical screw up. Customs does not search everything and if the container says 1976 rover then its a 1976 rover.

lots of info just takes some balls as larry says

i like the line that says "existing warranty" i wouldn't think that the dealerships would have much knowledge on a Td5...

Lisa,

I am a newbie as well. I just joined a Land Rover club here in Atlanta. I was not trying to call you out. I was just trying to help. Sorry if you took it that way. The only way to learn is to post questions here.

I think customs will search any container that says it has a Rover in it. They seem to be red flagged. From what I understand, the customs folks on the US east coast know Rovers better than most here ;-) There are some 1980 SIII 109s here that were caught by customs and deported. If they can catch a too-young SIII, you better believe they're going to know what a Defender is. Leslie mentioned the best way to bring one in legally.

Robb,
No offense taken at all. I appreciate the input from you. And yes there are many Disco's in NO area, especially Lakeview. (Most are soccer Moms)
