past few days of my commute I have smelled a burning tranny smell. my tranny oil smells a bit and should be replaced, but I just want to make sure that my tranny isn't going to die???? I am nearing 100K miles.. I changed it at 60K at the dealer... is this normal to smell when old? or should I have the tranny looked into... how many miles should I expect to get out of this tranny??? I tow dirtbikes and jet skis and have towed a boat and I am always going as fast as the thing will go... 90 95 down hill 70 up hill Thanks for any info.. Joe |

First off stop calling it a "Tranny" damn I hate that term... If ya gotta use a short please use "Trans" lol (Yeah , I know , I know) You may be smelling it cause its leaking. Is the fluid brown ? You should have someone do a "Pan Drop" and see what ya got. From that point they can either change it or delicately put it back together ,cross their fingers and slap it on the ass wishing it the best as you drive off... (hard to diagnose over a PC man) Kyle |

P.S. if you haven't changed the fluid in 40k miles while you've been towing and driving at 70 mph uphill, you've been abusing the transmission. Normal change interval is 30K; I'd say you fall in the "severe duty" category, and should be thinking about a 15k change interval. If yours has a drain plug like our 95, you can do it yourself, and 5 or 10 quarts (double change) of ATF is a lot cheaper than a rebuild or worse. |

You should get basically unlimted miles out of a zf. The rest of the truck will die first. But with the abuse you are dishing out maybe not. Don't go thinking that synthetic will make it all better, it will just flush the crap and clog up the poor zf and then you will need a new one. Stick to the normal stuff Ron |
