Does anyone have a clue at why i'm only getting 10 mpg's? My service engine light is on, i'm guessing an O2 sensor might be out, but damn.. 10 mpg's?

if your o2 sensors are out, your truck is running full rich all the time. I'm surprised your getting even 10mpg.

If they are over tightened, they will crack and funtion improperly.

Do you guys Stateside have LPG ( Liquid Petroleum Gas)?. It will cut the running costs. There is a trade off in fuel economy, (slightly higher, and a little performance loss), but here in Australia it's around 30c to 45c per litre compared to Petrol( you call it gasoline at 89 -98c per litre. It's big in Oz as we travel big distances and it does cut running costs. Although it is hard to get in far away places at times so I carry a couple of jerry cans of gasoline to supplement the cutdown fuel tank I have in the dual fuel Disco. 70 litre LPG and 40 litre Gasoline, it gives me a cruising range of approx 600 Kms. It doesn't improve Fuel usage but man it does save $$$$$

Even with big tires, lots of hills and carrying "stuff", I still get about 300-330miles per tank. SOmething is not right. 99 D2.

M. Recke,

The comparitive costs of Petrol here and LPG, are not different enough to make this viable. It makes much more sense where fuel costs are much higher. Your dollar is worth US$0.55. So in our money you are paying about US$0.25 per liter, or about $US20.00 for a full tank of Petrol. Propane seems to be 10% cheaper than Petrol here unless you buy in bulk, and then it appears to be about 25% cheaper (Bulk meaning 200-500 gallons per purchase). Given that it is less efficient than Petrol, the 10% in cost savings would likely be almost stripped away from having to use more to do the same work. And I don't think anyone here is going to be excited by the fact that they trucks will give up some performance either, considering how much we spend trying to make them perform better.

So in our case, it would hardly be worth the price of the conversion.

michael, nothing is wrong. i once saw a star trek movie and in that movie scotty referred to plumbing and sinks and how easy it is to plug a drain. my point is that so much depends upon the exact tune (including the sensors, wireing looms, etc) to be correct to get the best performance out of the powerplant. let one lil thing be out tolerances and the whole systems suffers some how. sometimes progress isnt so great, but i would not change a thing on my LR for the world, if your gas mileage sucks then chances are something isnt working, find it and it will improve.
IMHO

MKW, uhhh, sorry, what you said is what I meant. I was trying say that even with my rig "handicapped" (tires, weight, load), I'm still getting anywhere from 13-15mpg, so Adam must have something that isn't working properly.

I have always gotten 300-320 miles per tank.
Now it suddenly started getting about 250 for the last three tanks. The odd thing is, now it seems to have more power. I dont get it. But I'll be glad to give up the little bit of power increase for the 50-70 miles I'm losing per tank.

I still dont know with mine. '96 D1 and I get 10 mpg also. I have OME lift but stock tires, and a crack in the exhaust manifold (not a major one though). Also, I have banged one of the cats a while back. Not sure what that did. I do have a heavy foot but last tank I made a huge effort to drive consrevatively and got... are you ready for this... a whopping 11.4 mpg!!!
I have never gotten more than 12 in the city and 15 on the highway and it hasn't gotten that for the past 3 years.
I cant believe the mileage that some say they get. And I still dont know why mine has been suffering so much the past few years either.
So I do think that 10 to 11 mpg is "normal" if you can call it that considering how many people do get such shitty mileage.
Does anybody know how much the manifold issue may actually be affecting my mileage?

Adam,
If your "service engine" light is on, that doesn't mean that something is wrong. If your "check engine" light is on, that generally indicates a failure of some kind.

NAS D2 has *only* the "Service Engine Soon" light.

I drive a stock Disco 96 and I get 350 miles/tank. It is a stick shift and I have definitely not a heavy foot. I want to keep the engine and every other part as long as possible... ;-)

One of my o2 sensor has a dead heater. And if I do a lot of short trips (i.e. if the engine does not have time to warm up), then the MPG drop significantly. I received a sensor today, so that should be fixed next weekend! :-)

2 cents,
Loic.

YEP. Easily 300 miles/tank. Without even babying the pedal. I am super anal about keeping all filters, plugs, wires, etc up to snuff, even if I overdo it. When I travel on longer road trips, like San Diego to Los Angeles my mileage sky rockets to at LEAST 16-18 mi/gallon.
