Recently, our '96 Disco has had a strange thing happen. When going up a hill, or under a load (pulling our boat), when you hit 55 mph it will start to vibrate and loose power. I can shift it to 3rd and the RPMs will kick up and the vibration will disappear, but as soon as you pop it back into D, it will vibrate again. Today, towing the boat, it would not climb much higher than 40 mph, and seemed that the trans was slipping. I have read in previous posts about the VSS, could this be the culprit? Our Disco has 70K, and I have just had the wheels balanced and have replaced the rubber coupler. This problem only seems to happen in 4th gear and when the vehicle is under a load. Any ideas?? |

Try plugs and wires first..sounds like you are dropping cylinders under load. Kyle |

I have been having the same problem. Check your plugs and wires first. It may also be fuel related. Your fuel filter may need to be changed. My problem seems to have gone away after I dissconected the Charcoal canister purge valve(On driver's side of canister). If your VSS is bad you will see the speedo bouncing around when it shouldn't be or not working at all. Many people will tell you it is your valves, a common problem with D1s. Mine seems to be better now, after changing plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter,VSS, running fuel cleaner, and disconnecting purge valve. I am also planning on changing my trans fluid.
