Last weekend after reversing back down a v. steep rock-strewn hill which even the rear locker could'nt get me up I scrambled up the slope to assess the various lines of attack and noticed perhaps a cupfull of auto trans. fluid on the trail. An underbonnet inspection showed ATF sprayed around the rear of the engine bay on the dipstick side. I don't believe the auto dipstick had come out. Whilst driving home and after topping it up it's shifted normally. The trans was quite hot at the time. Any clues ? |

Maybe you boiled the fluid? And that would be a VERY bad thing. Pull the dipstick. Does the fluid like dark or smell burnt? -P |

G'day Perrone. The fluid on the dipstick both looks and smells OK .....I was not the first person to touch the dipstick, as I was inspecting the underneath of the vehicle first. It may be that the dipstick was pushed back in unintentionally. |

The vent hose for the trans is on the firewall near the dipstick. Our 95 used to slobber atf while driving up the 8% grade home in hot weather. Seems I heard the vent hooks into the back of the trans? If so, it would tend to slobber when pointed uphill. We solved the problem by taking it easier (slower) up the hill, and by scrupulously keeping the fluid at the proper level. |
