I have a '94 Disco. When in any gear, in Hi or Low (I don't know about Diff Lock because I can only test this on the road.) While going about 25-30 MPH there is a quiet knocking sound coming from under the car. (Yes I asked the gremlin, he said it wasn't him.) But it sounds like someone is tapping a block of wood with a hammer under the middle of the car. I have not had any trouble with shifting, or driving under power, or with any other vibrations besides throwing a wieght on one of my wheels. This sound only occurs when under power with my foot on the gas, not while coasting. Also, it has a frequency of about what you would expect when you get a rock stuck in one of your tires, it increases in speed with the car, but fades away after about 30-35 MPH. landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

U-Joint where? A CV joint? Or one of the joints on the props? I have checked those, and to my eye they seem fine... Is the missing tooth at all common, or is there any history of that happening for one reason or another? And how does one go about finding what gear!?! Thanks for any help |

Lock the center diff and pull the front driveshaft. Drive around to see if that makes a difference. Then replace the front and pull the rear driveshaft. Be sure to mark the driveshafts and the adapter plates so you can put them back on exactly the same way you took them off. Let us know the results. I'm with Kyle, it sounds like U-joints. Thanks, Mike B. |

i personally am replacing my heat shield over my catalytic converter...it had gotten torn a bit after being stuck in some deep heavy mud...it had leaned to the side after ripping itself off some of the bolts...it was hitting the drive shaft and making a wierd noise...don't know if this is similar or not...but hope it helps...later, jess |

Thanks! I have checked for things hanging up, but everything looks good down there. But at first I thought I had gotten a piece of string with something on the end of it whipping around hitting the bottom of the car. I will try the pulling of the driveshafts (propshafts?) after school is out. I'm a teacher - two more weeks, then Rovin' for the summer. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |
