OK peoples...as I understand some of you have owned more than one rover. Of those of you out there which is more reliable...a new rane rover 1996+ a defender or a 1999+ Disco 2? WHat has more mechnical issues. I was told by a popular rover tech and service department that range rovers are made better than discos and are less corrosive but cost more to fix when broken. What has your experience been? I am not tying to piss anyone off here its just that...well...range rovers are pretty cheap these days and I was planning on getting a kalahari but then they brouht out the 4.6 and im sure all rover prices will drop when the NEW models arrive ( or maybe 6 months after ) So talk to me! Thanks and hope everyone had a great weekend PS Kyle and HO - love the animations you guys leave....feel free to use some candor and wit should the conversation lead that way....as has been common to occur.... hehe |

D90s have less to break (fewer electrics, etc), but they're going to be harder to live with- Troy |

well....I already have a tricked out D1 and I am trying to decide between a 4.6 D2 and a 4.6 ange Rover. For te most part this wnt see alot of action...unlike my D1. I am not really interested in D90 though....dont get me wrongI like them but the would hardley fit my life style. |

No experience with the Range.... But this is supposed to be the top of the Range (i.e. expensive) _and_ the new models have some off-road capabilities, but are definitely designed to run at 120miles/hour on the highways. My father owns one Disco'96 TDi and two 1985 110 (diesel no turbo... :-( ). I own a Disco'96 4L V8. From my experience: the disco has much more electrical equipment and much more things can break (electrical windows, ABS, A/C,....). But the Disco feels much better to drive for long trips. Beside brand new models, Land Rovers (i.e. not Range! ;-) ) do not usually break. They are designed to be cared (a lot?) and usually you hear noise _far_long_before_ anything break. The Defenders (and series) were designed to be run under very bad conditions (i.e. far from anywhere), you can not take those in remote places if they break all the time. So, from the mechanical point of view, you can trust the series, 90s, 101s, 110s and Disco (1 and 2, called DiscoI in the US). From the electrical point of view, I never had "bad" problems with the disco (yet! ;) ). The US regulations are pretty bad because they add a lot of complexity into the cars to make them kind-of environment friendly. So.... More risks! My final summary would be: I don't know about newers, but the Disco 96 and Defenders/90/110/101/88/..... can be trusted from the mechanical point of view just fine. They will never let you down in the middle of nowhere. I have no experience of the Range, so I can not tell you.... People seems pretty happy with them!? 2 cents, Loic. |
