The following 2 codes showed up when I read the codes in my 1996 DiscoI. What do these mean?? P0420 Catalyst Efficiency Low Fault Bank A P0430 Catalyst Efficiency Low Fault Bank B Thanks in advance, Garrett |

I read the codes with a friend's Actron OBDII code reader. How soon will I need to replace the Cats and what effect will this have on my truck for now?? |

Garrett, Had the same codes on my own '96 Disco a few weeks ago. My cats were completely shot, but I was lucky -- Federal guidelines give you a 80,000 mile warranty for catalysts on vehicles '96 or newer. They don't give you any redress for other items that might be affected by the dead cats -- that is, my O2 sensors that were completely killed by the lethal exhaust. So, if you have less than 80k on the truck, give your friendly dealer a call and set up an appointment. They should be happy enough to help, as LRNA covers this under their warranty policy. My dealership (Portland, OR) was even nice enough to let me supply my own O2 sensors (care of Nathan), so the dealership bill was all of $150, the cost of the sensor install, instead of the initial quote of $3500 (of course, I owed Nathan $400). But hey, $3500 worth of work for $450 and a dealership wash and vacuum to boot --not bad. Brian |

Thanks for the tip Brian!! I am under 80K so I will check it out. |

I called the dealer and they said that the 420/430 codes could be a number of things...not necessarily the cats. Is this true???? How can I make sure they aren't trying to rip me off?? |

Take it to the dealer and ask them to only run tests on the cats. They can tell right off if they are toast or not. If they are, you're now under warranty and that test, plus all the additional work, is going to be covered. If the cats are fine, well, you now know they're not the problem and won't be out more than the shop's minimum labor charge. It's not much of a gamble, if you ask me -- and hey, it's a bet I personally have already won. Brian |

Thanks for the advice but does anyone know what else may cause these codes to come up???? 420/430 |

I believe that those codes are thrown when the post cat sensor does not exhibit the behaviour expected (the post cat o2 sensor should switch at a rate about 1/3 that of the front sensor). I can't think of much that will cause that other than a bad cat (particularly given the short path between the sensors on the rover). Have you crawled underneath and done a visual inspection of the exhaust system, any leaks or blockages? good luck. carl. |

I will crawl under there and look today. Is it possible that just the post cat O2 sensors or 1 of the sensors are bad or would that throw another code?? Would it be 420/430 first as the cats go bad and then post O2 sensors codes if I don't fix it soon?? Thanks for all of the help ya'll!! |

Why will loss of catalytic efficiency cause the failure of O2 sensors? |

Loss of efficiency doesn't cause failure of o2 sensors. Information gathered from the o2 sensors is used to calculate catalyst efficiency. Since catalyst efficiency is calculated from the readings from the o2 sensors, i doubt that a failed o2 sensor will throw the codes detected. Most likely you'd get sensor related codes. carl. |

Carl and Garrett, Again, when my cats failed -- also killing all 4 O2 Sensors, I only got codes 300 and 420. 300 is Misfire on Multiple Cylinder and 420 is Catalyst Efficiency Low Fault Bank A, so there were _no_ O2 codes stored in my OBD2 system when this happened -- and there are numerous codes that could have been thrown for bad senors. (You can check out http://www.spanishtrailrovers.com/Tech/Info/OBDII_Scan_Codes/obdii_scan_codes.html and see them all for yourselves.) I am, however, interested in hearing about Garrett's resolution of this problem. Brian |

I called my local dealer and set up an appointment to have my cats checked and replaced if they are bad. I am just barely under 80K so right now is perfect to get this solved under warranty. I will post back here after I get everything fixed. Hopefully the dealership will help me without trying to kill my bank account!! |

I don't see how a failed cat will "kill" an o2 sensor, the precat sensor works on un-catalyzed exhaust, and should do so for 80K miles or more. Something else probably killed the emission system, suspect oil in the exhaust (fouls the o2 sensor, clogs the cat). just my $.02. carl |

Brian, Well I owe you a huge Thank you!! You were right about the Cats. Mine were bad and are being replaced free of charge!! You saved me a ton of money!!! Also my Purge Valve is bad and I am replacing it as well. Hopefully I will see better gas mileage now!! Thanks Brian and Discoweb!!!! |

See, it's not every trip to the dealer that ends in getting ripped off -- sometimes, you do come out ahead. Good for you, Garrett! Carl, concerning the O2 sensors and oil in the exhaust, my own exhaust doesn't really smell of oil. I figure that if there were any other problems I hadn't seen with the truck, the dealer would have taken the opportunity to point them out to me, as a way of increasing the repair tab. Hopefully, these sensors will have a much longer life than my last ones. Brian |
