hey guys... I did a quick search in the archives but I didn't find anything about installing a TV. I wanted to install the TV right about where the manual crank is for the moon roof (btw I have a '98 Disco...)but at the same time I wanted to hide as much of the wiring as possible into the pillars and dash, is this something I can do on my own or will I need a pro to do it? Also, will it it be hard to create it's own powersource (if I want to go straight from the battery/fuse box for power) for the TV and the DVD player I want to install? |

We're taking a cross-country trip in the '95 Disco this summer and in order to keep the kiddies (ages 4 & 6) from murdering each other I'm thinking about getting a VCR for the back seat. Saw one at Circuit City that plugs into the cigarette lighter for $200 made by Audiovox with @ 6" flat screen with the VCR in a backpack thing that straps between the two front seats -- looks pretty good for the money. I'm wondering if anybody's had any problems with these things or if they draw too much power, etc. Thanks, Norm |

I perch this same vcr from circuit city for a road trip and it worked great.. My kiddie is 2 and the only prob was the speakers for the vcr are on the sides. I had Buzz LightYears sound track stuck in my head after 8 hours of driving... Good Luck, Rod |

I installed a TV/VCR/DVD in my 2001 DII. Keeps my 2 kids (3.5 and 2) very quiet on any trips we take. I didn't mount it from the roof. I bought a cheap roof mount TV from UBID.COM and modified it with a 'goose neck' arm and mounted it to the back of the center console. All wires are now running through the ashtray in the back of that center console. I used a piece of plywood behind the plastic at the bottom of the center console as support for the mount. VCR is under front passenger seat (I moved cd changer to glove box) and DVD is in the back. Here are 3 photos I posted a few months back.

One more thing... I ran a separate fused & switched direct to battery power source for the tv setup. We had a full size conversion van (with tv/vcr) and when we'd shut off the van or crank the engine, the tv would go off and the kids would whine - and we'd have to turn on all of the gadgets again. The direct connection to battery eliminates this 'problem'. I can post photos of my switches if you'd like, but it wouldn't be until later today. -Tommy |

The GPS is a Magellen Pathmaster (was once in the Hertz rentals under the brand name of Neverlost.) It's decent. I had put a Clarion AutoPC in my 97 DI, and I really miss it. I wish I could return the Pathmaster and get another AutoPC. -Tommy |

I've got an SD with no arm rests. I use the center console as my arm rest. -Tommy |

Just My Two Cents: When I was a kid we looked out of the windows and counted cactus and played games...how about a cheaper solution, a spinning mirrored orb to hypnotize the kids (less brain rot)? |

Teaching the kids to read is also an inexpensive option! |

I have found with my kids reading + motion of the car = puke, while reading may be fundamental kids cant generally handle it going 65 + mph. Anyone else with kids can relate to cleaning up kids puke from the leather seats and carpet not fun, its real hard to get that smell out while your on the road. If your worried about brain rot from all the useless eye candy kids watch rent some Discovery Channel DVD or other Educational type of programming (( Blockbuster gives it away cheep))then have a discussion about it, i found its more stimulating than counting cows or road kills or the ever popular I spy I used a laptop a few times on road trips with my old RR, for me a laptop made more sense than buying all the related hardware and then subjecting it to shock and dust damage. Besides it could also be used in the tent at night |
