Earlier this month, the Beast (94 D1) died from a terminal case of Cat. Converter Heartburn. I am looking with longing at a 98 D1. Here is the question: OBD reader? Who do I gotta date/sex up/eliminate with prejudice to so a nice Discowebber will tell me which type of reader I need? BTW, I am a retired Sailor, so not too much is out of what I lovingly call the norm. Thanks in advance. Bill |

Bill, A '98 Disco uses OBD-II. If you go to the Tech section, you'll see some links to the OBD sites. OBD2.com has Rover-specific files, BTW.... -L |

I just got the OBD-2 tool and have used it once. From a technical standpoint, it's very comprehensive and Alex is behind it 100%. However, there are some limitations for Rover as noted by Alex to me here, Quote: "...The rover file is only for trouble code definitions, if have any trouble codes reported. Select Land Rover in non-uniform code drop down list in center of code page, for additional descriptions if needed. Presently the enhanced button does not apply to Land Rover."
THe only negative I have on it so far is that it's not Win32 (32bit), and this is really just a nit. |

I bought the reader from Alex (www.obd-2.com) and absolutely found it a boon. It gives you so much information (assuming you have a spare laptop computer to hook it up to) while you are driving that identifying even complex problems should be easier. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I know that I can provide the data file to my mechanic (and lend him my laptop!) that is recorded on the laptop when driving around with the cable hooked up. This way if something serious comes up that I can't understand or fix I can use my independent shop (LR dealer too far away) and enable him to increase his skills on a fine vehicle. By the way, I have Windows 2000 professional on my notebook PC and it runs just fine, although it does disconnect sometimes if you are sitting idle. |

Thanks for all of the "Input" (pun intended!). Now I have some ammo to work with. |
