I believe you are referring to reverse cut gears as opposed to standard cut gears. This is just means of fabricating the gears and doesnt mean they actually rotate the opposite way.

Going from 3.54 to 4.11 reduces the strength of the ring and pinion because there is less tooth engagement to spread the torque across. So you should be looking for stonger parts than the original, not just trying to save money.

About a month ago I got the reverse cut 4.11s from GBR. This helped get my speedometer to read more accuratly with the larger tires. I also have better engine braking. And most importantly...it just feels right. Truck accellerates much easier, regardless of which gear the transmission is in. Before I used to drive around town in 3rd gear a lot, and would manually shift beteen 4th and 3rd frequently. Now it is a rariety that I even think about downshifting. There is no novelty effect to regret later, it drives like it should with these gears.

I also adjusted my kickdown cable(did this years ago to my RRC and have never looked back)so that the auto trans downshifts like a normal car. One reason that people think that Rovers are slow is because the downshift cable is set so conservatively. In any other car if you even think about going faster, the trans shifts to second and the engine goes to 5000rpms.

This cable controls when the automatic transmission downshifts. You know how nothing seems to happen when you're cruising and you push the pedal down a bit further in a vain attempt to accelerate? If you tweak the kickdown cable a bit, then something will actually happen (autobox will downshift).

Mr Watson

Ihave a 92RR with 245/75 tires. Before if he speedo said 60, I was actually going ~70(it read low even with stock tires). By reducing the gear ratio, I am now going ~55 when it says 60. Some day there will be 265s on my truck, and speedo should be dead on.

On my RR there is a little metal tab on the kickdown cable(close to where all the throttle linkages are). By loosening the locknuts and adjusting the gap so that it is 5mm, instead of 1mm, the kickdown performs like a normal car. Do not adjust too far, or it wont upshift into 4th.

Or another way of saying it: On a RRC, change the gap to 5mm. Test to see how well it works for you. It costs nothing to make the another adjustment.

The upshifts are stacked on rovers as well. The TV cable is certainly set too loose..

Can the kick-down be adjusted on a DSII, or am I stuck with a slug?
